Awford's faith in defender is repaid

Andy Awford said he had no doubts he was signing a man with character when he recruited Nyron Nosworthy.

The defender was voted man of the match in the win over Plymouth and Awford had praise for both the loan star and his defensive partner Joe Devera.

With three other contenders for their places out injured, the duo look set to continue their partnership at Morecambe on Saturday.

Awford told The News: ‘I thought Nyron has had his best game since being here, without a shadow of a doubt,’ said the Blues boss. I said he would improve and we saw that on Monday.

‘In the Wimbledon game it was a poor team performance. It is difficult when that happens in your first game, as it was for Nyron. Against Shrewsbury we bumped into a very good side, while I chose not to start him against Carlisle as we were going to a back four.

‘On Monday, he stepped back into the side and that was his best game. He showed what a no-nonsense defender he can be. The emergency loan window in March is a difficult window because all the players are playing in their team, while some haven’t played for a while.

‘You are taking a bit of a gamble on them at times — but in Nyron I knew I was signing a good character. We saw that against Plymouth. He stood up to be counted in a solid team performance.

‘There were a couple of bits you are always going to get. Yet, in the main, they (the team) defended well, with Joe Devera also solid again.’
