Chesterfield say they have turned down an approach from Pompey to talk to Paul Cook about replacing Andy Awford - although the League One club's stance doesn't necessarily mean he won't come.

Chris Turner, CEO of Chesterfield, said: ‘I received a phone call from Portsmouth, asking for permission to speak to Paul Cook, which I turned down. We are trying to win promotion to the Championship via the play-offs and we will do all we can to keep Paul at the club. Paul has been informed of the situation.’

Things may be different at the end of the season when Chesterfield's destiny is known - were the Spireites to miss out on promotion, it could increase the chances of Cook wanting a new challenge elsewhere.

And if Pompey's board have made Cook their top choice, a lot will depend on how long they are prepared to wait for an answer.

Meanwhile Gary Waddock, in caretaker charge following Awford's exit, has spoken of his admiration for another of the contenders, Martin Allen.

He told The News: 'Martin Allen is a very good manager. He’s done an outstanding job at Barnet and other clubs he’s been at. They’ve performed extremely well all season. They have had a period where they had a real gap between them and the teams below them.

‘Teams have got close to them but they haven’t panicked, remained calm and are still top of the table. Martin has everything to play for at Barnet to gain promotion and another championship for himself.'
