Gary Waddock says a second straight win can send Pompey's players and fans off happy for the close season.

He is urging the squad to bring about a rousing finish to a disappointing campaign when they host York in the season's final fixture at Fratton Park on Saturday.

Last weekend's win at Mansfield - only their third on the road in League Two this season - gave the Blues a lift after three straight defeats and Waddock felt that result was more in line with the effort shown by the players in recent weeks.

He told the Pompey club website: 'It’s the last game of the season and we’d like to finish on a high with a good performance and a positive result. Our displays have been decent in recent weeks, although we didn’t get any points against Stevenage or Bury. Then we played well and picked up an important win at Mansfield, so hopefully we can repeat that this weekend.

'There is professional pride at stake and whether it’s the first game of the season or the last, you have to give a good account of yourself. They’ll be playing at home in front of an unbelievable crowd and will have to perform for them as well.

'We’ve had a number of injuries, but that’s given opportunities for younger guys which is fantastic for their development.''

Pompey can't finish any lower than their present 16th spot but could rise as high as 13th in the final table if they get the points on Saturday and other results go their way.
