Who'll take the tussle of the promotion favourites?

They're two of the favourites to win promotion from League Two this season - and they meet this weekend.

It's Luton v Pompey but while the Blues' start to the season has been in line with expectations, the Hatters have misfired somewhat.

They'll be looking to get on track against Paul Cook's unbeaten-in-the-league side and Cook expects an entertaining tussle.

He told the Pompey club website: 'Luton v Pompey on paper is a very attractive contest and I’m sure there will be another big crowd. They haven’t made the best start, but in John they have one of the most experienced and knowledgeable managers around.

'I always enjoy his company after a match, he’s got a bit of class and is a great role model for all managers. They’ve come out of the Conference and have had a year of consolidation in League Two. I’m sure they’ll find their feet and be one of the most competitive sides in the division.

'It promises to be a great game and it’s one that I’m very much looking forward to. But we enjoy being unbeaten in the league. It’s something to be proud of and long may it continue.'

Cook is hoping Gary Roberts continues to have a major influence on the early part of Pompey's season and has been extolling his virtues in the lead-up to the visit to Bedfordshire.

He told The News: ‘I’ve seen plenty of players who have had a similar level of ability to him and don’t have that drive.
But I think our supporters know quite quickly that Gary Roberts is a good player.

‘When supporters see that attitude, people stick with you when it doesn’t go so well. I think Gary is earning that sort of status. That sort of attitude is ingrained in you. It’s a love of the game.

‘Nowadays with a lot of kids in modern-day football, they get money and it can take away the edge from them. A lot of people’s enthusiasm will shine through no matter how much money they are on.

‘Gary is certainly a role model for young footballers, in my opinion. He’s a fantastic footballer but he works very, very hard.’
