Tubbs times it to perfection for Pompey
Tubbs times it to perfection for Pompey

There have been plenty of occasions in recent seasons when Pompey have dropped a point or two through letting in late goals. But at the moment, we should make the most of the boot being on the other foot.

Last week it was Jayden Stockley heading in the equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Morecamber in injury time - this week it was Matt Tubbs firing in the vital goal to secure a 2-1 win at Luton. Suddenly, we like late goals.

Conor Chaplin, who like Tubbs had come on with less than a quarter of the game to go, set up the winner by holding off a defender and forcing a save from Elliot Justham, who could only push his shot out to Tubbs, who was never likely to miss.

That finally restored a lead initially given to the Blues on eight minutes by Gareth Evans, who profited when two Luton defenders made a mess of clearing a cross by Enda Stevens.

Luton levelled seven minutes from the penalty spot. Nigel Atangana conceded it with a foul on Josh McQuoid and Craig Mackail-Smith converted the kick.

That was a setback after Pompey's bright start and after the equaliser, no team took proper control for a long time.

Both teams had half chances in the rest of the first half with Stockley going closest for Paul Cook's man.

Evans and Gary Roberts tested Justham after the break but it looked like it was heading for a draw - until Tubbs had a late say.

Afterwards boss Cook told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'We’d taken control of a difficult away game and scored a good goal, but then we got sloppy. We weren’t happy at half-time because the equaliser had allowed them to get into the ascendency.

'Once we got to 80 minutes we thought ‘why not have a go’ because we’re still unbeaten away from home. Conor came on and affected the game, which was pleasing, while Tubbsy did his job by getting us the goal.'
