Dons bring more Fratton frustration for Blues
Dons bring more Fratton frustration for Blues

It's four home league draws in a row and six in total after AFC Wimbledon became the latest team to frustrate Pompey at Fratton.

Once again Pompey had plenty of possession - once again they created few clear-cut chances.

The point puts them fourth in the table but they are now nine points behind leaders Plymouth. And Paul Cook's side have not won a home league game since September 12.

With Caolan Lavery and Marc McNulty both starting, Cook's willingness to attack was clear and Lavery's low cross-shot could easily have been turned in during the opening exchanges.

Paul Robinson, on his return to Fratton, headed in a George Francomb free-kick but it was ruled out for offside.

Pompey played some neat-enough football in the first half but too often it failed to open up the Dons defence.

McNulty woke up the crowd early in the second half by beating Robinson during a powerful run and forcing Ben Wilson into an excellent save.

Christian Burgess couldn't keep a free header down from a corner and Lavery almost got on the end of Michael Doyle's angled pass into the box.

Kyle Bennett, Nigel Atangana and Matt Clarke came on as Cook tried everything at his disposal but no-one in blue could make the crucial difference - and the highlight of the latter stages saw the crowd rise to applaud Bobby Campbell in the 83rd minute.

The former manager, who died last week, led Pompey to the third-division championship in 1983.

Cook told the Pompey website after the game: 'Marc McNulty brought a bit of tenacity to our side and had a good chance, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. There was a little bit of discontent at the end of the game and I can fully understand that. We haven’t won enough home games — nobody’s arguing with that.'

Pompey head to Carlisle next weekend looking for their sixth away win of the season.

Pompey: Murphy; Davies, Burgess, Webster, Stevens; Evans (Clarke 58), Hollands, Doyle (c), McGurk (Bennett 66); McNulty, Lavery (Atangana 79). Subs not used: Bass, Boco, Tollitt, Chaplin

Referee: Stuart Attwell

Attendance: 15,892 (794 away fans)
