Pompey keeper backed after Ipswich error

Brian Murphy has been backed to recover from his latest error by Pompey goalkeeping legend Alan Knight.

Murphy was back in the spotlight at the weekend when Ryan Fraser's free kick from out side deceived him and went straight in to earn Ipswich an FA Cup replay.

It was not the first time this season Murphy had had fingers pointed at him for a goal conceded that proved costly, but in his column in The News, Knight said he had great sympathy with the stopper.

Knight told the paper: 'It was good to chat to Brian Murphy at the training ground yesterday. I had popped down to get some things signed for charity and, as ever, he was helpful and obliging.

'It gave me the opportunity to let him know I am well aware of what he is currently experiencing. No goalkeeper, dead or alive, has gone through a career without making a mistake. Murph is not having a lot of luck at present, but that is how it goes for goalkeepers.

'He made a misjudgment on Saturday against Ipswich for their late equaliser, but it is about how he responds to that setback. He has to learn and move on. The lad knows that, he is not blaming anyone else or trying to hide. He will be out there again on Saturday at Accrington, giving his all and doing his best. And I can truly empathise.'

Meanwhile there are concerns over whether the game at Accrington will go ahead. Stanley have a lost a number of matches to a waterlogged pitch and although it is drier this week, there are worries over freezing temperatures hitting the north west over the next 48 hours.
