Pompey fans and officials are mourning the death of Ray Pointer at the age of 79.

The former England international arrived at Fratton in 1967 having helped Burnley to the first-division title in 1959/60.

He also had time at Bury and Coventry before a Blues career that saw him score 31 times in 166 appearances. Hebroke his leg in a game against Birmingham at Fratton Park in the 67-68 season.

Pompey's first player of the season award went to Pointer, who carried on putting on the royal blue shirt until 1973. He later joined Blackpool and became their youth team coach.

A PFC spokesman said: 'Portsmouth Football Club would like to send their deepest condolences to Ray’s family and friends.'
