Lack of second goal was the killer for Pompey
Lack of second goal was the killer for Pompey

Paul Cook was bitterly disappointed to see Pompey end up empty-handed after being the better team against Plymouth - but rallied the troops by insisting there is plenty to play for.

The Blues led 1-0 with six minutes to go through Michael Smith's goal but let in two Plymouth goals in three minutes to see their automatic promotion hopes take a severe dent.

Cook told the Pompey website: 'The best team probably hasn’t won — but unfortunately that’s football sometimes. There’s no use me making excuses because we’ve lost one of the most important games of our season from a winning position.

'The lads are devastated — we all are, but we’ve seen these things happen before. We were very happy with where we were, although you’re always wary when there’s just one goal in it.

'The most disappointing thing — and I think the fans will agree — is that we didn’t get that second goal. If we’d have got that then the atmosphere and Plymouth’s energy levels would change, but we couldn’t get it.

'We’ve lost the game because of 10 minutes at the end and that will stick in our throats all weekend. If you make a defensive change then you’re perceived as being negative, but in hindsight I suppose that’s something I should have done.

'Well done to Plymouth because they leave with the points and good luck to them for the rest of the season. As disappointed as we are, there is still plenty to play for and so we have to go again on Tuesday.'
