Final few games offer big opportunity for Pompey
Final few games offer big opportunity for Pompey

Don't treat the final few games as meaningless - even if we are assured of a play-off place.

That is Ben Davies' message to his Blues team-mates ahead of the trip to AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night.

Pompey are assured a play-off place barring a freak set of results from themselves and a few other teams. But they still have three games left between now and the end of season knockouts.

Davies told the club website: 'We wanted automatic promotion and we’ve almost certainly missed out on that, but it’s still an achievement to get into the top seven.

'It could mean that the last few games are almost meaningless, but it’s important that we gather some momentum. We need to be at full throttle, keep ploughing on and make sure that we’re ready to face whoever it may be.'

Davies felt the Blues did well to make sure of the win over Wycombe which has put them out of sight of the other play-off chasers - Wanderers included - and lifted fans after the defeats to Plymouth and York that all but ended their top-three hopes.

He said: 'It was an important win for us — we’re more or less in the play-offs now, so we can start planning ahead. We were a bit sluggish at the start and looked slightly nervous, but after that we could have easily been three or four goals up.

'It was comfortable for us at the back, while the lads going forward were cutting Wycombe to pieces. But fair play to them because they kept going, scored a decent free-kick and had a couple of other good chances.

'I suppose after the Plymouth game and a few other results this season, it meant we were always going to be hanging on a bit.'
