Beating Dons could help Pompey in play-offs
Beating Dons could help Pompey in play-offs

Paul Cook thinks Pompey's win over AFC Wimbledon could be a psychological blow to the Dons if the sides meet again in the play-offs.

The Blues dented the Dons recent good run as Michael Smith scored the game's only goal.

Cook was delighted with the win that confirms once and for all the Blues will finish in the top seven and told the club website: 'We were positive in our play, got men forward and created a few clear-cut chances on a very difficult pitch. Wimbledon were the in-form team in the league, but I thought we were excellent and credit must go to our players.

'If we do end up facing them in the play-offs then we can take confidence from the fact that we can beat them. Gary Roberts and Kal Naismith have had great chances and we should have scored again, but that’s football.

'If you don’t get that second goal you’re always on a bit of a knife-edge, but our appetite for the game was always there. The supporters were in great humour and the players deserve all the plaudits they got — it was a good night.

'Our away form this season has, overall, been very strong — our inconsistency has come more from our results at home. We had a lot of lads out injured — I could be here all night talking about them — but whatever team Portsmouth Football Club selects should be good enough to win football games.'

Pompey head to Hartlepool on Saturday.
