New Pompey defender Tom Davies is working his way back to fitness after an injury-disrupted start to his Fratton career - and is determined to play his full part in a season of success.

The former Accrington centre half played in the 3-3 friendly draw with Accrington and was happy to get a game under his belt. Now he is keen to get full match sharpness before the League Two opener against Carlisle.

He told the Pompey website: 'I’m just coming back, so I’m a bit behind some of the other lads at the moment. You don’t want injuries when you’re coming to a new club, so I was absolutely gutted when I had to pull out of training.

'It was nice to get out on the pitch — although I was a bit short of breath afterwards. But the fitness will come with more games. It was certainly hot down at pitch level, but that’s pre-season and you have to deal with it.

'Now I want to make sure I’m in tip-top condition for the first game in a fortnight. We’ll be working on shape a bit more in the build-up to that and hopefully we can get off to a good start by beating Carlisle.'

Davies is confident Pompey can have a good season: 'You can see the calibre of player that we’ve got here and there was a big crowd that turned out for a friendly. We want to get the club back to where it belongs and hopefully that will start with promotion this season.'
