Pompey's squad shake-up continues as kick-off nears

Pompey warned up for their League Two opener against Carlisle with a busy day in the transfer market.

They completed the signings of defender Adam Buxton and striker Noel Hunt and bid farewell to goalkeeper Paul Jones.

Full-back Buxton, 24, comes in on a one-year deal from Accrington.

He told the Pompey official website: 'I’m happy to have signed for such a massive club — it feels like we’re only going to go in one direction. Hopefully I can help the lads get out of this division and back to where everyone wants to be.

'The fan-base here speaks for itself — it’s the best in the league and only Sheffield United from the one above are on a par with Pompey. I’ve played here at Fratton Park and seen first-hand that the supporters really get behind their team.'

Joining Buxton in the arrivals lounge is striker Hunt, who has featured in a number of Blues friendlies and has impressed fans and boss Paul Cook.

Hunt, 33, told the website: 'This is a fantastic club,. They have a great reputation and manager, so it was a no-brainer for me. The gaffer wanted me to come down here and see what a professional standard it is. It’s a really high quality.

'I’ve turned down a few clubs from higher leagues because I felt that this was the right one for me. This is a club with plenty of ambition and I spoke to friends of mine who have played here before — like Andy Griffin, Jason Pearce and David Norris — and speak very highly about the place.'

Meanwhile Jones has been quick to leave Fratton after the arrival of David Forde on a season loan from Millwall signalled he would not feature prominently in Cook's plans.

He headed to Norwich wishing Pompey well and telling the website: 'I want to thank the fans and can assure them that I always gave 100 per cent during my time at Fratton Park.

'I loved my time here and am sad to be leaving, but I received a great opportunity and they don’t come around too often. I wish the club well and the manager’s put together a strong squad, so I have every faith that they’ll get over the line this season.'
