Coventry 3 Pompey 2: Rose comes out - and Pompey go out
Tuesday, 9th Aug 2016 22:56 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey are out of the EFL Cup - but only after giiving League One Coventry a scare.

They led 1-0 through Curtis Main's penalty and took it to extra-time through a stunning Kal Naismith free kick which made it 2-2, but eventually bowed out to Andy Rose's extra-time winner.

Adam Buxton, Tom Davies, Amine Linganzi and Main all came inb for their debuts while Adam Barton was made captain.

Pompey opened the scoring on 19 minutes when Kyle Bennett's jinking run into the box near the right-hand goal-line was judged to have been ended illegally by Marcus Tudgay. Main put away the penalty with ease.

Main and Gareth Evans both went close to doubling Pompey's lead while Bass was looking assured in goal and the Blues - on this occasion in black - led at the break.

Coventry improved after the break and levelled on the hour as Ryan Haynes fired home when the Pompey defence only half-cleared a cross.

Vladimir Gadzhev converted after being teed up by a pass from Ruben Lameiras, who had also supplied the ball in for the first goal.

On a night when Paul Cook had made it clear this competition was not a priority for Pompey, no-one would have minded too much had it finished like that. But Naismith was having none of it, picking himself after a foul and sending a superb free kick into the top corner to the delight of the travelling fans.

That led to an extra 30 minutes - perhaps not welcome by either team - and the goal that prevented a penalty shootout came from Rose in the 106th minute, pouncing when a Haynes shot was parried by Bass.

Bennett had Pompey's best chance of the extea 30 minutes but it was not to be for Cook's men. They're on their travels again on Saturday when they head for Crewe.

Pompey: Bass; Buxton (Talbot 77), T.Davies, Barton (c), Naismith; May, Linganzi; Tollitt, Bennett, Evans (Chaplin 64); Main (Hunt 84). Subs not used: O’Brien, Whatmough, Doyle, Baker.

Referee: Andrew Madley
