Goal shortage a worry for Pompey, but no more than that
Sunday, 14th Aug 2016 10:18 by pompey-fans.com staff

Some might be panicking at Pompey's firepower - or lack of it - but with two games gone, it is surely too early to worry.

After all, the Blues are unbeaten after two games and ha they done what they should have done and beaten Carlisle when they dominated their home League Two opener, a 0-0 draw at Crewe second time out would have seemed a better result.

Two points from two games is not the return Paul Cook would have wanted at the start of a campaign when he is under justified pressure to achieve promotion - and 17th place in the early league table would not have been on his agenda either.

But these are very early days and Cook has time - and the squad - to solve the shortage of goals that has stood between Pompey and a flying start.

In all fairness, a draw at Gresty Road was probably the right result, though it was more that neither side did enough to win, rather than neither of them deserving to lose.

Both keepers had relatively quiet afternoons, both sets of defenders had comfortable times.

Pompey were much the better side early on though Crewe did wake the home fans by coming more into as ad half-time neared.

The introduction of Curtis Main and Kyle Bennett nine minutes into the second half, in place of Michael Smith and Milan Lalkovic, did for a while bring new life to the Blues and it looked like they might find the breakthrough they craved.

Main had two or three good late chances and ought to have made one of them count - the consolation for Cook would have been to see that at least his side were creating openings.

Crewe were not without their own chances but for the second week in a row, the Blues back-line looked solid - even when Jack Whatmough hobbled off late on to be replaced by Adam Barton. Everyone will hope it's not another major setback for the Gosport youngster.

So Cook takes his troops to another north-west outpost - Morecambe - on Tuesday hoping for a goal and for a first win that will ease the pressure that threatens to build up so early in the campaign.

Pompey: Forde; Talbot, Whatmough (Barton 74), Burgess, Naismith; Rose, Doyle; Baker, Roberts, Lalkovic (Bennett 54); Smith (Main 54). Subs not used: O’Brien, Buxton, Chaplin, Hunt.

Referee: Dean Whitestone

Attendance: 4,742 (1,257 Pompey fans)
