Pompey 4 Wycombe 2: Chaplin raises roof as Blues win fourth in row
Saturday, 10th Sep 2016 18:43 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey moved to within a point of the top of League Two when they recovered from going a goal down to Wycombe to win an entertaining game 4-2.

It was a special goal by sub Conor Chaplin in first half stoppage time that swung the game Pompey's way.

This was their fourth straight win and leaves them in second place, their tally of 14 points bettered only by Plymouth's 15.

Wycombe took the lead on 10 minutes - that after a bright start by the Blues - when Paul Hayes converted after a clever pass by Garry Thompson.

It was 1-1 on 34 minutes as Christian Burgess reacted fastest after Jamal Blackman in the Wycombe had failed to hold a Carl Baker effort following Milan Lalkovic's corner.

We then had three goals in the final couple of minutes of the first half, which must have included a fair amount of time added on for Wycombe's time-wasting.

First Gary Roberts blasted home a penalty after Gareth Evans' goalbound header hit a Wycombe arm. But Wanderers hit back as Hayes struck a fine finish past David Forde.

Pompey regained the lead, though, with a wonderful goal by Chaplin, who latched on to a pass by Roberts, lifted the ball over a defender and then showed superb awareness to head the ball over the advancing Blackman to raise the Fratton roof.

The second half was never likely to live up to the breathless pace of the first half but you also felt Pompey were in control despite their earlier defensive frailities.

Baker gave them a two-goal margin when he volleyed in a Stevens cross on 53 minutes.

As happened last week against Crawley, when the game was won, it rather patered out - but Pompey ended the afternoon with another three points, their fourth win in a row and second spot ahead of next week's long trip to Accrington.
