Five in a row would be fabulous for Pompey
Monday, 12th Sep 2016 22:27 by pompey-fans.com staff

It's a good few years since Pompey won five league games in a row, but that's the statistic they're eyeing up as they head to Accrington this weekend.

Victories over Colchester, Exeter, Crawley and Wycombe have put Paul Cook's troops second in the table but the next test - away to last season's fellow play-off semi-final losers Stanley - is likely to be tougher than any in the run so far.

Skipper Michael Doyle said the team had momentum ahead of a game that would see Cook and Leam Richardson return to a former club.

Doyle told the club's official website: 'There’s a bit of a rivalry because the gaffer and Leam used to be there and a couple of their players have switched allegiance to us.

'But just we want to concentrate on ourselves and try to go there and make it five wins on the bounce.'

Doyle felt the Wycombe win on Saturday showed Pompey have progressed in the past 12 months.

'When you start sloppy and switch off you get punished. We had to be patient, but we got there in the end. We showed great character and I think we’ve learned a lot from the past year — we might have struggled to draw that game last season,' he said.

'As good as the result was, I think we could have used the ball a bit better and made life easier for ourselves. There’s a lot for us to work on.'
