Tranmere are keen to keep Ben Tollitt - but will Pompey want to bring him back to Fratton Park to boost their attacking options?

The forward has been a big hit since making a loan move to Prenton Park and Rovers boss Micky Mellon is keen to at least extend the deal.

Pompey have yet to say whether they will be willing to let that happen and Cook, who has given Tollitt first team chances before, may see him as someone who can add something to his squad in the second half of the season.

Mellon told the Liverpool Echo: 'We know that we really rate Ben, and if you ask him he loves it here — he really does. He knows what a special place it is to play football. And I think the fans really enjoy him playing here. Look, he’s nowhere near the finished article that he can become, but he’s certainly got flashes of stuff at the minute which makes you think ‘oh that’s different to what we’ve seen’.

'He’s got loads of work to do but he’s a good lad and a good player and we would love to keep him here.'

The Echo reports that Mellon knows Cook well, which could help his hopes of keeping Tollitt on Merseyside.

Mellon said: 'He’s a great friend of mine and I’ve known him for many many years. We will try and sort something out with Portsmouth as quickly as we can. I don’t know what Portsmouth’s plans are, I’ll be honest with you.'
