Top three spot in Pompey's sight but Grecians could be slippery
Friday, 27th Jan 2017 20:47 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey make another bid to break into the top three when they play hosts to in-form Exeter at Fratton Park.

If they beat the Grecians and Carlisle to lose at home to Barnet, the Blues' superior goal difference will see them leapfrog the Cumbrians.

But whatever Carlisle do, Pompey will just be glad to get their own points on the board if they can overcome Paul Tisdale's team, who have risen from the relegation zone to the top half of the table in double quick time.

The Blues are expecting a stiff test but right-back Gareth Evans says it's one they're looking forward. He told the club website: 'We were gutted that the game was called off last week, so we’re looking forward to Saturday. There are benefits to the postponement, like the lads getting a bit of rest into their legs, but I’d personally rather be playing.

'It was frustrating, although we know Crawley did all they could to get the match on and there were a couple of other fixtures off nearby. We’ve watched some clips of Exeter and they’ve obviously had a good run of form. They look impressive, especially in an attacking sense.

'They’re not shy about scoring goals at the moment, so we know it’s going to be tough at Fratton Park. They were scrapping around the bottom of the table earlier in the season, but now they’re revitalised and will provide us with a stern test.'

There are few clues as to Pompey's line-up but it would not be a surprise to see Paul Cook start with the same XI who started in the win over Leyton Orient a fortnight ago, with new strikers Jamal Lowe and Nicke Kabamba possibly keeping each other company on the bench.
