First Pompey goal is only half the reason for cheer
Sunday, 26th Feb 2017 20:22 by pompey-fans.com staff

Jack Whatmough revealed his delught at his maiden Pompey goal - and at helping Pompey to one of their most vital victories of the season in the process.

Whatmough sidefooted home like an experienced striker to put the Blues three up in injury time at Carlisle, sealing a dominant second half display from the visitors.

It left Pompey just three points behind Carlisle in the race for a top three spot and Whatmough told the Pompey website: 'It was my first goal for the club and something I’ve waited a long time for. It means a lot to me. I saw that there was a gap to run into and knew that we were safe at the back, so I just went for it.

'Conor was there as well and I thought that he was more likely to score, but it fell to me and so I hit it as hard as I could. The manager just asked me to keep a clean sheet and thankfully we were able to do that But I was able to get one myself and we also got another two, so it was a really good day overall for this club.

'I thought that we controlled the game pretty well and to come to a place like this and get three goals is impressive. We’ve got massive spirit in this squad and it’s nice to see the bench going mad whenever we score. We were clinical in what we did and were able to get a massive result to help close the gap on the top three. It’s a step closer to where we want to be.'

Whatmough is likely to be back on the bench when Morecambe provide Pompey's next test, at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
