Pompey 4 Grimsby 0: Now it's 10-0 in 8 days for rampant Blues
Tuesday, 14th Mar 2017 23:37 by pompey-fans.com staff
Pompey made it 10 goals scored, none conceded in eight days with their third straight win - and second successive 4-0 success - as the Mariners were mashed at Fratton Park.
Although Grimsby started well they were rocked back by Kyle Bennett's third goal in three in 12 minutes. That went in with the aid of a delfection, and so did Danny Rose's deserved second on 35 minutes.
When Carl Baker made it three just before the interval it was all over - and Kal Naismith made it four after the keeper spilled a Baker effort in the opening minute of the second period.
Pompey couldn't add to their tally but it mattered not as other results - Doncaster's the exception - went their way to move them six points clear in the third and final promotion spot. They're just four points below second-placed Plymouth - but face a tough trip to Stevenage on Saturday.
Manager Cook told the club website: 'The players have done really well to put this club in a fantastic position with nine games to go. The excitement’s building around the place and that’s what we’re all involved in football for.
'We played really well, but it’s just three points and there is so much still to play for – I’ve been around these leagues long enough to know there can be twists and turns.'
