Pair push for Pompey recalls at Southend
Thursday, 15th Feb 2018 20:43 by pompey-fans.com staff

Kenny Jackett's selection options for Saturday's visit to Southend have been boosted by defenders Jack Whatmough and Brandon Haunstrup proving their fitness.

If the boss wanted to shake up his defence after the midweek loss to Blackburn he has the perfect chance to do it with the pair pushing for recalls.

Both youngsters played in a reserve game at Bognor last week and have now shown they're back in business in an in-house training match.

Haunstrup could be picked at left-back if Jackett wanted to use Dion Donohue elsewhere, while Whatmough seems more likely to be on the bench rather than being thrown straight back in - the centre half having been out September.

Speaking about the fit-again pair after the training match Jackett told the Pompey website: 'The pitch was very heavy, but that’s good for them and will certainly help their fitness. They’re both fine.

'We’ll obviously treat heir injuries with respect, but we’re pleased with their progress and they’re now fit to play.'

Pompey are looking for a double over Southend, having beaten them 1-0 at Fratton Park in November thanks to a Brett Pitman header.
