Outstanding Pompey away form needs to be seen at Fratton

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett is looking for his players to take their superb away form into successive home games next week.

He responded to the 2-1 win at FC Wimbledon, courtesy of goals by Tom Naylor and Gareth Evans, by praising their performances on the road and calling for a repeat in front of their own fans against Fleetwood on Saturday and Burton the following Tuesday.

Jackett told the Pompey website: 'We were well in control for an hour and had got ourselves in a good position. There were a lot of chances and we had the ball in positive situations. We had to find a different way of playing with three of our four natural wingers out. It shaped my thinking about the balance of the team and that’s why you want a strong squad.

'But they brought the three subs on and got some momentum, although we found a way of seeing it through in the last half-an-hour. It wasn’t as calm as it looked it might be at one stage and we did well to come through the pressure Wimbledon put on us.

'We’d have liked the ending to be more comfortable, but it’s been an outstanding away record this season. Now we want to crack it at home and we’ve got games coming up against Fleetwood and Burton to try to do that.'

With Dion Donohue, Ben Thompson and Oli Hawkins all back in the starting line-up, Pompey bossed the first half and went ahead when Naylor nodded in a Donohue cross 24 minutes in.

Seven minutes later Evans made it 2-0 when Jamal Lowe played in Lee Brown for a low cross across the goalface that the stand-in skipper slotted in from beyond the far post.

At that point it looked like Pompey would be out of sight before the break but it remained 2-0 and the Dons fought back after making three changes for the start of the second half.

The home team were back in it on 63 minutes when James Hanson finished nicely after an error by Evans. And although Wimbledon did have half chances to level it up, Pompey dug in and held on for the three points - their sixth away win in seven this season.

Pompey: MacGillivray; N Thompson, Whatmough, Clarke, Brown; Naylor, B Thompson; Evans (Walkes 89), Lowe, Donohue (Close 74); Hawkins (Pitman 80). Subs not used: McGee, Burgess, Dennis, Mason.
