Professional Pompey impress the viewers - and the boss

Pompey moved pretty effortlessly into round two of the FA Cup as they beat Maidenhead 4-0 at York Road - leaving most observers impressed with their professionalism.

Goals from Ben Thompson, Oli Hawkins, Jamal Lowe and sub David Wheeler saw off a brave challenge from their National League hosts and put Pompey's name into the machine for the second round draw, which takes place on Monday night.

Boss Kenny Jackett felt it was a job well done. He told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'We want to progress as far as we can in this competition and hopefully get to a stage where the big boys enter. That’s our aim and to do that you need to cope with — and come through — days like this, so we’re pleased to be in the second round.

'We had good control of the game right the way through, with a lot of quality balls into the box during the first half. You want to get out of sight as soon as possible, but it was always going to be tough because Maidenhead wanted to stay in the game as long as they could.

'Tom Naylor hit the bar and our opponents did then have one moment when they struck the post, but we got the key goal just before the break. It was a good cross from Ronan Curtis and Ben finished it — that set up what we did in the second half when we were kicking down the slope and our fitness levels told.

'With the second, third and fourth goals going in, it got more and more comfortable for us and it was a very professional job.'

The opening goal came from Thompson a couple of minutes before the break as he timed his run into the six-yard box perfectly to meet Ronan Curtis's ball in from the left.

It was two on 55 minutes as Hawkins guided his header over the keeper from a Gareth Evans cross, and three a matter of minutes later when Lowe lashed home from a Jack Whatmough nod-down after a free-kick was lofted into the box.

Sub Wheeler dived to head in No4 after the keeper failed to hold on to Lee Brown's free-kick.
