Pompey have a night to forget as Addicks inflict second defeat
Tuesday, 11th Dec 2018 23:43 by pompey-fans.com staff

A second defeat of the season stopped Pompey from completing their best post-World War II run of straight wins - and prevented them extending their lead at the top of League One.

On a night when the Blues were left raging over a number of officials' decisions, they were undone by two first-half goals - and unable to claw back a point despite a spirited second half fightback.

They lost midfielder Ben Thompson to a late red card but may appeal against it, with video evidence showing it was very much a 50-50 challenge.

There was a bright enough start by the Blues but they did not seriously test the goalkeeper before Karlan Grant converted Lyle Taylor's cross from a couple of yards - with the Blues claiming there was an offisde in the build-up.

It got worse for the Blues just before the break as Nicky Ajose - who had come on for the injured Grant after the first goal - converted with Craig MacGillivray wrongfooted after a cross from the right by George Lapslie.

Pompey and their fans were even more furious over this goal - with the Addicks having taken the ball out of play before it was crossed, but with the close-by linesmen not seeing.

Pompey piled out plenty of pressure in the second half and Kenny Jackett introduced Brett Pitman for Oli Hawkins and later Andre Green for Lee Brown.

There were a couple of penalty appeals and plenty of corners but it took until the 88th minute for the Blues to pull one back - Green sidefooting in a Gareth Evans ball across the box - and that simply didn't leave them long enough to find an equaliser.

Thompson was sent off for a challenge that looked to most like a 50-50 one, with the Pompey man appearing to get to the ball marginally before his opponent.

One of those nights? Most definitely.
