Thank Evans for a Pompey lead - but Barnsley hit back
Saturday, 15th Dec 2018 21:01 by barnsley 1 pompey 1 gareth evans

Pompey would have had mixed feelings as they headed home from Barnsley - content with a point at the home of a promotion rival but wondering if they might have had all three points after leading at the interval.

Gareth Evans' goal put Kenny Jackett's men a couple of minutes before the interval after he seized on a poor defensive clearnace to control the ball and fire home, but Cauley Woodrow levelled just after the hour.

After that Barnsley had plenty of pressure but Pompey looked dangerous on the break - and in truth neither side would have benn unhappy with a point.

Jackett again named an unchanged team as they looked to recover from Tuesday night's home defeat to Charlton.

Although Barnsley had the lion's share of the attacking play in a first half played in wet, windy and very wintry conditions, Pompey had their moments with Ronan Curtis and Jamal Lowe each having chances to give their side the advantage.

And it was skipper Evans, with his eighth goal of the season, who did that on 43 minutes when he ran on to a weak defensive clearance, controlled it with his right boot and fired a low shot into the bottom corner with his left.

It was all square just past the hour mark when Brad Potts' speculative cross into the penalty box was touched past Craig MacGillivray by Woodrow.

Barnsley must have felt they could have gone on to win it from there but although they did plenty of the pressing, Pompey had their moments on the break. Curtis felt he should have had a penalty and Oli Hawkins drew a good save out of Adam Davies in the home goal.

Pompey: MacGillivray; N Thompson, Whatmough, Clarke, Brown; Naylor, B Thompson; Lowe, Evans (c), Curtis (Walkes 75); Hawkins. Subs not used: Bass, Burgess, Close, Donohue, Green, Pitman

Referee: Jon Moss

Attendance: 12,441 (1,674 Pompey fans)
