Pompey boss - We want to finish the season, but may not get that chance
Saturday, 28th Mar 2020 21:04 by pompey-fans.com staff

Kenny Jackett is far from certain the 2019-20 season will be concluded - but he still believes it should be if at all possible.

With football clubs out of action until April 30 and quite possibly much longer, the FA and league bosses are discussing whether to draw a line under the present campaign or give it longer to allow a resumption and proper finish to the season - whenever that may be.

Jackett told The News: ''We would all want the season to be concluded. But it would very much depend on how long things go on for - and how it impacts next season. That’s the big thing.

‘It’s hard to gauge right now. What is the best thing to do as we work in towards an overlap from one season to the next. It’s really difficult to gauge - and that’s why people haven’t made a decision right now.

‘We have to wait and see what the overall situation is. If we can finish the season that would be great, but we may have to just review that as we go along.

‘There’s lots of discussions going on, but the last few weeks have been ever-changeable. It’s not just week to week but day to day with the overall situation. I think that will continue, because it doesn’t look like things are going to get better for the next couple of months anyway.’

Meanwhile a statement put out by the EFL and other football authorities implied that a decision on the way forward may be taken within the next seven days.

It said: 'The Premier League, EFL and PFA met today (March 27) and discussed the growing seriousness of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was stressed that the thoughts of all three organisations continue to be with everyone affected by the virus.

'The Premier League, EFL and PFA agreed that difficult decisions will have to be taken in order to mitigate the economic impact of the current suspension of professional football in England and agreed to work together to arrive at shared solutions.

'The leagues will not recommence until April 30 at the earliest. They will only do so when it is safe and conditions allow.

'Further meetings will take place next week with a view to formulating a joint plan to deal with the difficult circumstances facing the leagues, their clubs, players, staff and fans.'
