Pompey quick to adapt - and set up FA Cup third round chance
Sunday, 27th Nov 2022 21:30 by pompey-fans.com staff

Reeco Hackett felt Pompey did well to adapt quickly to a change of system as they knocked MK Dons out of the FA Cup at Fratton Park.

Danny Cowley ditched 4-4-2 and went with three at the back plus wing backs - and although it was not Pompey's most fluent display of the season it did produce three goals and what in recent weeks has been a rare victory.

Hackett told the club website: 'It was a really good result and I thought we played well in the first half after changing the system. That’s never easy and you have to adapt to it, but we managed the game and reacted well to conceding the first goal.

'There were a few moments after the break when we could have done better. We didn’t have the possession and when we won the ball back, we didn’t look a threat. Obviously there’s a lot to work on, but we won the game and in a cup tie, that’s all you really need to do.

'We’re missing some players, with a few injuries and a couple unavailable, so we’ve got through it well. There are a lot of leaders and big characters in this group and going into the last 20 minutes, we were strong enough to deal with the pressure.'

Hackett was happy to find the Fratton End net himself to make it 1-1 and said: 'I just saw a gap after the ball fell for Jay and saw the keeper wasn’t set, so I took it early and it was a decent finish.'

The third round draw, which features Premier League and Championship sides as well as third round winners, is on Monday evening.
