What did we learn today.... 17:09 - Apr 21 with 4236 viewsYorkRanger

* A fit Barton will be critical to our play off chances.

* Three at the back does not suit the personnel available

* Trarore could be valuable on the left of a 3 in a 4 2 3 1. He brings needed pace and width.

* Almost certainly LTC will play in the 2 of a 4 2 3 1

* Onuoha has to partner Hill in the centre of defence.

* without doubt we can beat anyone on our day....

And we definitely play Wigan in the play-off semis...

Charlie still has the knack of scoring goals just when we need them. Priceless.

Even if we play terribly, we always have a chance with him on the pitch.

A back four of Simpson, Chief Hill and Yuk will do fine for me.

But Arry will go with Dunne and Hill in the middle and BAE on the left.

That even when not playing well for much of the game you can win, not a day to be too disectional in how and why we won, good to see both Barton & Austin back and scoring.

The playoffs are well within the scope of winning, the next two games are dead rubbers and I expect some strange line ups, Millwall the game where the splinter gatherers and maybe a youngster or two should be put out, will be a lot at stake for Millwall and I don't expect it to be pretty, why risk your key players, dont want us ever to lose but next two games are an irrevalance and as long as we don't get beat by cricket scores would let HR off the hook for not producing 'Barcelona' type performances from a team made up of bit part players, Barnsley may already be relegated by the time we play them, might be worth then putting out a decent squad just to get an idea of how the playoff starting line up may gel, but be looking to sub after an hour or so just to protect those oh so precious players that at least have us looking like we can win.

Wigan are the team what worrys me the most, but as op says on our day we can beat anyone, just wish we didnt have to wait 45 mins to start playing, HR seems to gone from a manager who played to win first to a manager to not lose first.

Anyway a win for morale is welcome..

"Stan work hard, could score goals in the air, and was complete team player. He headed balls off the line, and he had so much skill, balance, finesse and amazing touch. His mobility, that electrifying burst of 30 yards was exciting to watch"...Don Shanks.

We've been saying 'the result is all that matters all season' - but the fact is for the most part we've been second best against any half decent side we've played. HR probably will make numerous changes again for the next 2 games, but that would be huge folly. What we need now is a settled XI, as close as we can get, and go into those games as confident as we possibly can be in our line up, formation, tactics and so on.

Bare bones.

Except at this point performances do matter, because we need to be going into the play offs knowing what the best starting XI is, what formation they play in, and with some sense of momentum. Much of this afternoon was another shambles: we were played off the park by Watford for large stretches of the game.

Don't see how Barton's critical to our chances. Good free kick but we've got plenty of players capable of passing straight to the opposition, doesn't just have to be him.
3 at the back definitely doesn't suit us and Christmas Carroll shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a football pitch, not even to hunt for autographs.
Onuoha and Hill would be class at CB together, Dunne is increasingly error-prone.
Great hit from Austin, just gotta hope he's not injured himself celebrating it!

QPR - "shit but local"

Two ways at looking at this, why give away your tactics and maybe starting line up before you have to, that should be done behind closed doors, if HR hasn't got a very good idea of who works best by now and have a game plan in place (injuries permitting) then why bother with him,may as well get rid and pick the team from a supporters poll.

I bet Wigans best team aint no big secret or the way they play, ours to a certain extent may still be, HR has put so many different line ups out , it must be very confusing for any scout to give a report on just how and who will start.

IMO we are a much better side with Barton in it than not.

another way of looking at it. not one i agree with in this instance because we simply haven't got the luxury of 'hiding' our tactics - because we don't really have any. What we need to do, and have needed to do all season, is develop a fluid way of playing the game and maximising our chances of winning. That means getting Ravel in the no.10 position behind Austin as much as possible to get them used to each other. It means playing Carroll and Barton as part of a 4-2-3-1 because clearly they don't work in a 4-4-2 or similar. It means playing a settled flat back 4, preferably without Dunne or BAE. Go in as strong as we can.

Agreed. We can still be sensible, I.e. Replace Austin after 65 minutes and sub Barton if he is about to get sent off....

I agree with you preferred formation and personnel .I think these players are experienced enough to just pick it up . If BAE is as commited as he was last year he is the best LB imo...

Tactics? Do we have any? Not even a plan A today.

Two flashes of individual brilliance got us through, everything else was like watching a pinball game. Didn't help with a ref that did nothing about Watford's cynical fouls as soon as a man was beaten. Should have been yellow cardng them much earlier.

MOM - Ned followied by Traore.

Dunne is rapidly looking like SWP's grandad with his latest poor performances.

That it is an absolute must we finish 4th and have the 2nd leg at home.

Once we got the equaliser today the place started to rock and under the lights I fancy us to beat anyone (unless of course we completely mess up the first leg beyond repair! )

Agree.

Ned and Traore were a mile ahead of everyone else. Traore really seems up for it at the moment. Covered a lot of ground and really out it in.

Ned was outstanding and barely put a foot wrong.

Ned MOM? I suppose there weren't many candidates but 1st half he was poor, very poor. Just to add thought Traore was the pick with a 6 or 7 out of 10. Everyone else 5s or 6s.

main thing was that Redknapp is trying to get his best players on the pitch and did the only way we can with a 3-4-1-2 again, not sure it worked that well really and probably tells us we have to sacrifice either Morrison or the second forward to play a wide player. tough call really but well worth trying it today and possibly again next week so see if it can or can't work.
