St George's Day 00:07 - Apr 23 with 3170 viewsstowmarketrange

Happy St George's Day to one and all on here.
One day we might be able to celebrate it properly with a bank holiday.

Yes to Bank holiday.

However, presently we can't even vanquish scam kitchens, let alone dragons...

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

It is bizarre that in England we make a bigger fuss about St Patrick's Day than St George's Day.

This day will pass off without many English even realising its significance.

It will continue like that until the government move the May Day bank holiday to St George's day and give us all the day off to celebrate properly.

i think the bbc mentioned it at 5.46 am , just after the daily extensive report on womens football, FGM, an impartial and informative piece on why voting ukip makes you responsible for the slave trade and why banks need more housewives from tower hamlets on their boards to achieve more ethical profits, by trading in fair trade hemp or masala dosa......chiv them all eddie my friend...chiv them all..

Agree. But very unlikely. Not PC you know.

A few years ago myself and a few others went into town to celebrate the day. Red roses bought with pride and we had a cracking day in Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and vowed to return the following year.

Next year we went into Leicester Square to find the pubs and bars closed all afternoon. On enquiring we were informed that in typical English style there were several brawls and a couple of bars smashed up so they all closed on advice of old bill.

Not for today. On the eve of the Battle of Agincourt
St. Crispin's Day, October 25th.
But it is Shakespeare's birthday.

And it is also the birth date in 1814 of Angela Burdett-Coutts who along with Charles Dickens set up a home and rescue centre for former prostitutes and fallen women in Shepherd's Bush.

To be fair Saint George had f.uckall significance to England but seeing as the government have spent the week declairing that we're a Christian country and that anyone who disagrees is deluded then I'm sure they'll back up their words and give us the day off to enjoy St Georges Feast Day.

Flagons of mead and wild boar all-round...For Dave and St George!
