his tactics and why they failed, has some resonance towards QPR this season too.

Thanks for that. That article really could have been written about us this season.

In fairness HR probably thought he had enough pace in the team with Phillips one side and Hoilett the other, but one has been inconsistent and injured long-term, the other has had more injuries than you could shake a stick at and has massively underperformed in between.

"When the whole of Europe was shifting their focus towards fast, counter-attacking football, thanks largely to the success of Barcelona and Bayern Munich..." Barca play counter-attacking? FFS

"Real Madrid broke the world record for the best counter-attacking player in the world, Gareth Bale" apart from his team mate, that is.

Very interesting, nonetheless.

reminds me of the tactics under Gigi De Canio, the speed of break and understanding between the players was brilliant to watch.

you could see how well drilled they were in the distribution of the ball from our box on the break; was great to wath as you knew as soon as the ball was cleared we'd be attacking within about .... oh too late, we'd scored!

even with Phillips and Hoillet the playing out from the back has meant that teams have just got behind the ball and after watching most of the season with us having ridiculously high possession stats, we are woefully short of goals.

Strange article. On the one hand he's talking about need pace to counter attack in the modern game. Then he starts saying that United need to break teams down that park the bus. Not sure that having lots of pace is going to help in that scenario.

It looks like many big teams are moving towards a more counter attacking style which is going to become quite boring to watch when two counter attacking teams play each other, particularly if one team have no intention of leaving their half like Chelsea vs. Athletico earlier this week.

People will say that Bayern had meaningless possession last night but at least they were trying to take the game to Real which made for a more interesting spectacle than the game on Tuesday.

Sounds about right. Mourinho failed in Madrid because his anti-football was unacceptable.

It's a shame that the media over here welcome Mourinho's anti-football with open arms because he makes controversial comments afterwards. Maybe they should start selling tickets to his press conferences because his Chelsea team is dire to watch.

Sour grapes from Valdano, as it was him or Mourinho who stayed at Madrid.

Not sticking up for Mourinho, just stating a fact.

Why pick on English teams anyway, for boring football, I've seen boring stuff in Spain and Italy, all with home grown and foreign coaches !!

I'm finding Bayern boring to watch this year and Barcelona were getting that way at the end of Guardiola's reign. undoubted talent and could easily turn the 2nd leg around but the possession game to the level they work at is not entertaining. Some of the players must be concerned at the change in style as Robben/Ribery are far less effective if they don't receive the ball early.

Real gave them to much respect last night and dropped deep far too early but came away with a decent result and the second leg should be a more spectacular game.

Possession is important clearly but do it like Liverpool, they keep the ball moving quickly as did Guardiola's Barcelona when he 1st took over. You don't get extra points/goals for having 75%!!

Completely agree with this. The game last night was technically brilliant, but was still very dull to watch. The top teams are just too good defensively to have an entertaining end-to-end contest.

The last World Cup was bloody awful to watch as well.
