Exactly.

He's a top manager whether some like it or not.

I am not having a dig at Harry or saying he's not a top manager, he clearly is, but his policy and love of transfers is well known and if you don't have a board/chairman there to temper him, he will go out and buy everyone in the world, twice.

Whilst I like the idea of signing a young GK who could be with us for a long time to come, I'm not entirely comfortable with how Green will react to this. We know he's very fragile in terms of confidence and, having only just got rid of Cesar, he might well have trouble with this signing.

Secondly, Reading would be left without a keeper, so not sure why they'd be keen on this at all, especially with a new owner coming in.

I suppose we could always sign McCarthy and then loan him back to Reading for the season (with a recall if Green picks up a serious injury).

I think there's a difference in fair competition between keepers such as Green and McCarthy would have, compared to the immediate relegation to the bench Green faced when Cesar arrived.

I assume McCarthy would come in as competition and as a cup keeper with the onus on him to unseat Green as the incumbent.

edit - and Reading still have Federici don't they? and we could always loan Murphy too them as part of the deal, he's said he wants to go out on loan if he's not the second keeper.

Reading wouldn't be left without a keeper! Federici has started all their league games this season and McCarthy has only played against Newport in the cup.

I don't see the problem, Green would obviously be the undisputed number one unless he has a real, prolonged dip in performance.

I'd rather not be left short by an injury to Green having done such a good job at sorting out the rest of the squad!

I've only seen McCarthy once that i can remember anyway, in the game in which we went down I think it was, and i thought that his distribution was pretty poor that day. It doesn't seem to have imporved much either, so there will be work to be done on that front:

Yes that's fair comment, but I think that you need to go for the right players in the first place, whether or not you can get them, and now we are going for the right ones. I think that in this case Redknapp's chicken has preceded the board's egg, as it were.

He's always looked a good keeper when I've seen him, was superb against us in our home game in the prem, made several ridiculous saves.

Would be an excellent signing if not just to annoy the Reading fans at work. In games against us previously he has looked excellent, that one in the Premiership stands out. Also, now is a good time to nick players from Reading while they seem intent on selling for average prices. Might as well try and nick Jordan Obita while we are at it...

Agreed. For me, the best thing about the way we have gone about things this season is not being held to ransom and simply moving on to our next 'target' if our first choice doesnt come to fruition. People like Sigthorsson or Deeney for example, both players we wanted but they came back with a valuation or set of personal demands we deemed unsatisfactory so we simply said 'never mind' and moved on. The set of targets we have had this year have been exactly what we needed and we have not panicked or paid over the odds for the sake of signing someone, which is night and day in comparison to how we fcked things up last time.

Reading haven't been taken over yet, McCarthy is known to favour a move to Premiership side to push his career and international credentials on hence Federici playing more I think.
Not entirely sure this takeover will see them splashing the cash either..., that have a few money worries currently do the Fakes.

Yeah definitely that's how it seems to me too. It's a lot better.

McCarthy is one of the best young English keepers around and at £3m would be a steal. My reservatons would be about timing.
Green has just signed a 2 year extension.
Bringing in another keeper is a bit like the return to bringing in Cesar.
What benefit would we get from signing McCarthy if he's going to sit on the bench for most of the next 2 years.

The ideal would be to get him at next Summer
OR
get him now and loan him back for the season (a la Newcastle with Darlow).

Any thoughts?

Arry really is the Adel of managers I've decided. The difference in the quality of his work between when he's stroppy and uninterested and when he's engaged and enjoying the limelight again is like night and day.

If we loan him back, then I think it's a good move. If he spends a season on the bench then it seems a bit pointless, unless we can strike a cut-price deal RIGHT now don't really see the point.

I just worry with Murphy; just under 100 appearances for Bohemians and under 30 senior appearances in the English divisions at 31 years old is arguably less experience than Alex McCarthy has already at 24.

I'm not surprised we're now being linked with a young goalie, as if Green got injured it would be really concerning at the moment. If McCarthy is happy with being a no.2 then its a good move. From listening to one of the friendlies Rob Green co-commentated on this year; I didn't get the impression he thought he'd be playing for much longer at 35 in January.

When Reading were in the Prem and struggling (along with us) and Nigel Adkins was just appointed a number of the 1st team were awarded longer enhanced contracts by the Russians. The policy was to stop these best players leaving if the were relegated and so to ensure they bounced straight back. Those that were granted new 3 and half year deals were McCarthy, Federici, Guthrie, Pognabarek and others.
The Russians then did a bunk last season and Reading didn't get promoted. Both keepers on big money (sound familiar) and both prepared to sit on the contract and leave on a free if Reading weren't doing well.
So I can only see that Reading want at least one of the keepers off the wage bill and will take a reduced fee to do so.
As far as McCarthy's form is concerned - Great shot stopper and commands the box - poor goal kicker (they have had specialist coaches working with him) so tends to always try and throw/pass out to lb/rb.

Quick - get him signed then lock the doors, unplug the phones and modems, lock Harry in a cupboard without his mobile with some bread / water until the 2nd Sept!

Thought Murph was good last night. Dont think this will do much for Greenos confidence.

I reckon we will bring in at least 3 more. Robinson, McCarthy and a ST.

I would rather just sign Robinson and then get on with coaching the ones we have, but we do need a solid defensive LB if we play with 4 at the back.

We complain about the club not thinking long-term and now they do for once it's too unsettling. Hard to understand. It's a great price for a great prospect.

This is professional football, we can't walk on eggshells for fear that Green will have a panic attack at the slightest bit of competition. Signing the Brazilian #1 was one thing but it shouldn't be the same with an up and coming English keeper ten years his junior.

Green keeps the #1, McCarthy bides his time.

+1
Plus I am not sure that Alex will be #2
