Magic mind bender still on holiday, is he?

Sports psychology is clearly a vital part of top level performances for many sports people. Many a match has been lost in the minds of the players of all sports over the years.

However, I'm not sure if psychological turd polishing is possible.

The whole point is that he is a sports psychologist. The players need to meet him halfway by getting fit, practising properly during training (e.g. learning how to consistently deposit a football in a regulation sized net using both their head and their feet), listening to the team talk and remembering what their job is, putting maximum effort in on the pitch (e.g. sprinting when a sprint is required, not half-heartedly trotting like the ghost of Dave the sub) and actually concentrating for the full length of the match.

If they are not doing those things, it's Merlin we need, not Steve Black.

They are not because our players are guaranteed huge sums of money even when they don't perform.

Take SWP for instance even though he has been shit for years, he will probably be offered a lucrative contract in the American League.

In football players are pampered and are wealthy from an early age without even playing for a top club. In other sports individuals have to find sponsors, have a job to finance their career etc to stand a chance of competing in sports with less openings.

No offense but I think your deviating slightly from the subject. My point is that in top level sport psychologists can, and have been proven to, make a difference/improve performance. Our players are playing at the very top level (as Sky presenters/slaves take such pleasure in ramming down out throats so regularly). The GB track team and the SKY tour team are also at the top of their sport. Comparisons can clearly be made.

What you seem to be saying is that no comparison can be made because football (Premier League) players are over paid, pampered, and yes, your right, some of them sh1t. This is a totally different subject and one that I would definitely agree with you on.

Some people were in that mode after we lost our 'must win' first match against Hull!

Torn on this. Getting the mind right and focused must be important at top level sport; but every time I've read, seen or heard psychology (mainly tv) it does strike me as a bunch of American psycho-babble!

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

He may well be a good thing, but only in a very minor way and we are losing and under-performing in a major way. I wouldn't put down anything that helps improve performances, but more important is decent and professional coaching , tactics, selection, motivation and using tactics that suit the players available and selected. These are all areas where we are failing and the responsibility of our manager. Then we hear our board are thinking about extended his contract - are they blind to what is happening in front of them?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I agree with many posts on this thread &, as I argued on this blog before, I'm sure Mr Black is a great guy, but he is a sign of our weaknesses, not strengths.
Let's be honest, why do we need an outsider to come in & motivate our team?
This is HR's job. First he got SMc in to coach, then Black to motivate, then GH to coach.
A decent manager does both these jobs.
HR is good at managing over-paid players & the media, which is what he has done well. But, since he was devastated by not getting the England job, at QPR he cannot be bothered to coach, motivate or tactically adapt to other teams (except for Wigan away in the play-offs, when he briefly got the team right). We have all seen he picks his favourites & sticks with those he trusts - & his signings have followed this pattern, especially RF. He & we got very lucky that CA & BZ came back from injury to save us last season - every fan knew we were short of decent, fit strikers at the start of the season & not enough was done to address this - LC & Burnley got this right & deserved the auto spots. It's that simple - & there is no need for a psychologist to explain this or motivate players if we could have a manager who does his job properly. Then he introduced many new players who were unfamiliar & complained they played like strangers Vs spuds. HR led their transfers & PICKED THEM!!

I agree that motivation and psychology are primarily the remit of the manager, but in any area you take specialist help where you can get it.

Are we just going through a list of people to blame now for the start to the season?
Jude the cat? Overrated. Can't play the wing back position. Gets distracted by the crowd too easily. Get rid imo

The idiotic wittering for most pre-season by posters on this board about how Steve Black was going to 'get the payers head' straight drove me up the wall. I remember some simpleton even saying he'd sort out Adel! Now that is a laugh.

Never been a bigger load of rubbish that sports psychology.

Thank you doctor!

The problem with Steve Black isn't Steve Black. It's that we're getting in a load of blokes to do stuff that Redknapp can't be arsed to do himself.

Player motivation, coaching, tactics, training sessions and press conferences seem to be farmed out rather than supplemented by the other coaching staff.

Everything is rubbish after three defeats.

Including polar opposits at the moment which is making me smile.

Traore is a "disgrace" v Spurs but its a "disgrace" we're selling him.
