In the top 3 of the super hoofers

3. QPR — 1685 long balls attempted

Very much a team in a constant state of flux, it should come as no real surprise to see QPR this high up a list of teams who have attempted the most long balls in the Premier League this season.

Only Man Utd (surprisingly) and Burnley ahead of us.

1685 long balls played! That is a lot from a team that traditionally plays the ball on the ground. Mad concept, I know.

I'd be more concerned if I was a Utd fan given the players and manager they have.

Never knowingly right.
Poll: How long before new signings become quivering wrecks of the players they were?

Burnley's piercing long balls into the channels that Ings and Barnes are working looked a damn sight more effective than our aimless hoofs at a double marked Zamora or an isolated, static Charlie Austin.

Quite appropriate that there is a photo of hollywood long-ball specialist Barton on that webpage.

Harry would have an excuse for this anyway.

"I don't do the stats. Never have. Don't understand them. Didn't have them before. Did fine without them. Who does the stats anyway? Never played long-ball game. Everywhere I've been, never played long-ball game. No idea about them. Wal?"

Well they play with strikers on the shoulder of the last defender, their balls set strikers and wingers away behind full backs. Our long balls are in the general direction of Zamora, who if he is not doubled up on can get a touch and then we play the percentage game, hoping the ball ends up in a position where Charlie (usually) can have an attempt on goal.

The problem we have is 1) Zamora can't do that consistently and 2) if teams make plans to stop Zamora doing what he wants (see Palace @ home) we have no alternative plan except put more attackers on and hope that equals a goal.

Only Burnley and Palace have a lower pass completion rate so far too, although Joey Barton must be personally culpable for much of that stat this season. If we turned more of those long balls into crosses to Austin we'd be much better off for them!

Whoscored.com is pretty good if you like stats. Charlie Austin comes of very well.

If it makes you feel better, we are down in 5th for long balls Europe-wide.

5th in Europe? That's beautiful.

I wonder if there 's a way to see what percentage of these long range shells have been fired when BZ wasn't even on the pitch?

3rd that does surprise me considering our tactics at home are to pump it up to BZ and away to CA. Pointless having a midfield.

Yeah, even with Peter Crouch in the side for 13 appearances; Stoke have the 6th least long balls in the league after Arsenal, City, Swanselona, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Was anyone complaining about the long balls when we were winning? I know it hasn't worked for the last few games but the lump it to Zamora and play off him approach did serve us well for a while and has put us in a position where we have a fighting chance

Dave,

Replace "last few games" with "last few months" and "served us well for a while" with "served us well for 3-5 games", then you've got it right.

It worked against Villa, Liverpool, City (although we actually passed it a bit then) and okay against Burnley and Leicester. WBA, we were thoroughly outplayed and scored from 3 corners. Since then, and throughout the season away from home it's failed miserably. How many goals has Zamora scored, btw? 1? How many goals has Austin scored that have involved Zamora? 1, 2?? Take out pens, headers from crosses/corners, a tap in or two and you're left with his long range effort against Villa.

Anyway, the main point is, it worked briefly, everyone found us out, we haven't adapted. There's nothing wrong with liking/praising something when it's working and then when everyone gets wise and it stops working, criticising it. Tactics do depend who you're playing. "A time and a place", etc, etc, etc.

I thought it worked well at home from October to December where we beat villa, burnley, leicester and west brom and did well against city and Liverpool as well. Zamora may not have got the assist or goals but I thought he did pretty well as a target man in those games and helped Austin massively Winning those games has put us in the mix so i wouldn't dismiss the way we played or how Zamora did so quickly. I think we'd be mad to try and rely on zamora all season, he'll be useful off the bench and in certain games from the start but the trick now is to find a different way to win matches.

Away is a different story we've been crap all season no matter what style we've used.

We got played off the park by WBA and scored 3 goals from corners. Definitely scratch that one off. So, really it was Oct-Nov. But again, I don't think we beat Burnley and Leicester because we played direct with BZ and it worked. I just think we were at home and they're both pap. Could have played a different style and won.

Villa, City and Liverpool, I agree.

Ever since Palace it's been abundantly clear it's not working.

Even a team of hobbits from League 1 nullified that tactic for a whole half.

all i'm saying is it worked and got us points in those games regardless of if we were the better side or not. I agree it probably won't work for the rest of the season although it's not a style i'd dismiss quickly and i'd stil use it for certain games in the run in, we just need to vary it a bit so we are not so easy to defend against
