What a great set of photos and the colour quality, if genuine is fantastic for the time. I love browsing through things like this, it can take you to another place. To think my old man was 5 years old when these photos were taken, he would have remembered scenes like these especially the London transport pictures. My mum would have been 2 at the time.

Good post Metallica. Makes a change from the various depressing subject matters that have been cropping up on here lately.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Disgraceful!
I spotted 3 current QPR defenders and a ponderous striker on the sightseeing bus in that photo. Why weren't they at training?

Can you imagine having a Tw@tteresque rant with someone by post?!

Really like seeing these old photos and video footage too, though I wish they'd slow the video down a tad so it's more realistic as they all look like something out of a Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Laural & Hardy slapstick comedy. Seeing WWI footage like this sort of takes away the seriouness of it all IMO.

I love the idea of a twitter rant by post!

Great thread Metallica, really appreciate it. The year my dad was born, as it happens.

Carts were a thing back then weren't they? Also notice how objects like carts, ice cream vans, and post boxes were lovingly decorated.

For a minute thought there was a woman with QPR written on her head in 8th picture down, but sadly it is CPR, I suppose a reference to the Canadian railway.

Yeah, looking at the uniform he looks like he was in the Crimea.

Not maybe as daft as you think, there were Crimean veterans still around at the start of WW1. Just as when my dad joined up at the start of the Korean War, there were still serving soldiers who had fought in WW1

I did wonder, it's quite plausible.

He's have to be about 90 though.

I was reading something just the other day about black Confederate soldiers.
I can't for the life of me remember where. However the author said he interviewed, recently, the grandson of one. I can't be bothered to do the Math (sic), but that doesn't seem likely.

Great pics though Metallica.

I love the women in those button-up shoes.

Oh nice, thanks.

He must have been near end of service if that's the case. Either that or he had a really hard life.

That's not a Boer War uniform (1st or Second)

Khaki was worn in the 2nd Boer War. Scarlet still worn in the first, but tunics (i.e. jackets with skirts at the front coming down to mid-thigh, like a modern guardsman's full dress.) That guy's wearing a coatee - short at the front, with tails at the back - which went out of use shortly after the Crimea.

Age-wise, anyone aged 20-40 in 1900 (middle of 2nd Boer War) would be 48-68 in 1928. I suppose he could be a 68 year old, I can't see that he'd be as young as 48 or even 58.

Don't know if the medals are a clue

Love the buses in the Trafalgar Square shot - 6 to Kensal Rise and 15 to the Grove, just as today.

I've been looking up Victorian Medals but I'm stumped.

Could this be the one on the right? (1870)
