Advice re Dogs 14:05 - Apr 21 with 5796 viewsJacksDad

Hello All!

My boy, Jack is 7 - has downs syndrome, autism and sensory processing disorder. Over the last 9 months we introduced him to a kitten slowly but surely bonding them to such an extent that they would sit next to eachother and Jack would stroke him. Which was amazing. However 2 weeks ago we took the cat to the vets and it escaped from his carrier and did one. Occasional sightings since then but no definates - lots of leaflets and posters and even an article in the local rag but no joy.
We said to our 10 year old that the chances are that he is now gone for good, and she suggested that Jack would probably have been better off with a dog anyway. So we have been "introducing" him to friends/family/neighbours dogs and he is fantastic with them. It is amazing the affect it has on him.
Although there are wonderful organisations such as Dogs for the Disabled which specialise in providing dogs for our kids the waiting list is horrendous, so I am throwing it out to you guys .. any suggestions .. please be aware that in the words of Mick Hucknell, Moneys too tight to mention.

Labradors, Retrievers or Cocker/Springer Spaniels are probably the best choice of dogs for your needs. But always do research. Good luck with the searching for the dog for your son and hope you get the right one.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Definitely go online to https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/ and find out where your local centre is. Dogs Trust is a brilliant organisation and they will give you advice and help on best breed/kind of dog to get in your circumstances. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Re on staffies.

Doesn't it just boil your piss the way they're perceived in the press, because of the way they're treated by certain sub humans?

Dangerous breed my arse, it's certain dog owners who are dangerous and need putting down!

Couldn't agree more on this. We have a 6 year old staffie and he is the softest most gentle dog. We have people avoid us when they see him. All he wants to do is make friends with people. He is great with kids. If they are annoying him he just stays away. If adults annoy him by over crowding him etc he might give a little growl but nothing more.

All dogs can have behaviour problems, just tends to get noticed more when its a staffie.

For all you Lab lovers.

His name is Max. He is just turned 2. Can't say much more than what other Lab owners on here have already said. Brilliant dog and a pleasure to have in my home. Love him to bits.

If you spend some serious time and energy into your research it's the best move you can make.

I'd also highly recommended watching episodes of Cesar Millan on youtube to give you an insight into Dog Psychology.

Best of luck.

My sister is a vet and she (and most vets apparently) share the same view about Staffies. Demonised by the media, when, according to vets, they are one of, if not, the most friendly breed.

Good luck with your search JacksDad. I think both cats and dogs are great for a child's development, as it teaches so many things about looking after and caring for something. And definitely look for a rescue dog.

Labs are a great shout as they are so craving of attention they don't care what form it comes in. My weimaraner plays with loads and gets away with all sort of alpha abuse as they just want to play. Really loveable dogs that are easy to live with.

Staffies are also great with kids and get a unfair rep due to most of the owners being complete vvankers who see them as a status symbol, any untrained, unexercised dog that is used as a statement of aggression will end up as a crap pet. I know a couple of old ladies that have them and you'd struggle to find 2 dopier dogs.

Good luck with the hunt as there is loads of evidence of the improvement that dog can bring to someone like your son, really hope it helps you and brings him a lot of joy.

Thank you all so much from myself and all of Team JacksDad - the Missus is following up all your leads - especially The Hearingdogs as Jack does have hearing issues, glue ear is very common with our kids.

Bit late to this one, great you are after a rescue dog, so many need a decent home. Best to try closer to home rather than mine in Spain, so you can see how your boy and dogs get along before bringing into the family home.
I would recommend A castrated German Shep, to reduce testosterone, but I am biased, they make great pets and double as guard dogs, fiercely loyal and loving.
Keep us posted on your search.

Cracking.

He looks in great shape and has that "keen to learn, just want to please" look.
Our's looked exactly the same when she was 2 and she still has it some 4 and half years later but she's greyer around the gills and a bit slower.
Unfortunately one of the curses of labs can be joint issues --- we struck unlucky there but ce sera with a rescue from a back street breeder. The best thing is to keep the weight down, supplements and hydrotherapy and if I had my time again I'd be doing that with her BEFORE the ED was diagnosed (by Fitzpatricks off the tele!!)

Brighton - good to see you are keeping up the good work. Fair play mate and I'll try and whack somemore donuts your way this summer.

Good luck JacksDad.... hope you give a lab his or her forever home. I'm sure you'll be like me and wish you'd got two!!!

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Another man in the Lab Devotion Society.

They're placid, loyal, loving and utterly consistent. And their eyes would melt your heart, so the devotion goes two ways! When I was a kid mine would walk me to school and show up bang on time for break, for lunchtime and to take me home. Loved all my friends too. They're ideal for children.

Ditto all that with Golden Retrievers, by the way.

The Dogs Trust sound amazing. Hope it works out for you and yours.

Also recommend watching After Thomas, a one off drama based on the book A Friend Like Henry. It's based on a true story of how a pet Lab is beneficial to a young lad with autism.

Gotta agree about Labs, never seen one lose it with anyone for any reason, great temperament.
On the Staffie argument, while I recognise not all of them are monsters, my puggle was viciously attacked by one a month ago and absolutely loses his shit whenever he sees one now since his recovery

Sorry to hear that. I can't talk about others, but I've made sure my staff has interacted with other dogs since the day we got him.

If another dog shows any aggression towards him he runs behind me with his tail under his bum.

He really is a tart

By being distracted Whilst out walking I think, other dogs, food on pavement etc.

Ok, I thought it might be due to very rigorous exams.
