Obama has deployed Keynes 101 - and their unemployment is now back to 2007 levels, its GDP is the highest ever and the economy is growing much quicker than the rest of the developed world. Further more national debt is only a problem if you can't service it. The US can borrow money from the market at absolute peanuts (see also Germany who are actually making a profit on the cash they loan Greece as they can borrow it so cheaply).
Private debt and state debt are two totally different beasts. It's much easier to write off national debt...unless you've borrowed off another country who wants to appease their own electorate as Greece are finding out.
Just taking an axe to public finances is a dangerous game - I mean even the IMF (the IMF!) are criticising the current economic policies of the Conservatives here as its undermining our long term economic prospects

I don't remember all these Keynesians calling for a substantial public sector surplus when the economy was going well.
The Germans may be making a cash flow profit on loans to the Greeks at present (though not big as they are charging them only 2%), but they won't when they inevitably write a chunk of it off. Anyone can lend money, getting it back is the hard part. If you hold a bad loan, it doesn't matter if it's a state or a private loan. The idea that state loans can be written off with impunity is ridiculous. They can be rolled over, at the cost of higher inflation, but a write-off is someone's loss - banks, pension funds or private individuals.

No country is an (economic) island. An interesting discussion would be what would America and the world look like if Romney had been elected. I think he would have:
- run deficits, but not as great as Obama
- taken action on Syrian chemical weapons use, instead of that "line in the sand"...
- dissuaded Russia from some of its recent adventurism
- tried to tackle domestic over-spending, but not aggressively (austerity lite?)
- risked (and seen) greater civil unrest at home as a result of austerity lite
- been lambasted in the (liberal) media for not caring for the poor
- put boots on the ground before Ramadi fell.
- not signed the nuke deal with Iran
- put NASA back on track for manned exploration of Mars, and possibly a moon-base
- put tougher measures in place on the Mexican border, especially in areas where the drug cartels control the other side of the border
- done more for US Vets
- kept Donald Trump uninterested in saving America from Obama/Clinton II.
How many of these would you agree he would have done?
How many would you personally have supported?

Also, the President doesn't set fiscal policy in America. Congress passes appropriations laws. The President can veto appropriations laws, but that rarely happens except in extreme cases. |  |

What a load of nonsense. The Democrats have won over 95% of the black vote over the last two presidential elections. Obviously, Hillary won't do as well as Obama, but polls have her well over 75% with blacks, just under 75% with Hispanics, and around 60% with women. Trump has no chance to get above 20% with blacks or hispanics and is unlikely to break 40% with women. That means that he has to rely on white male voters. Hillary is currently polling around 45% with men. There are enough white male Republican voters to give him an outside shot in a republican primary that is split 16 ways (there are 16 candidates currently running in the republican primary), but it means he is completely uncompetitive in the national election.
Stop talking such junk. You may wish that Trump had a chance, but wishing it does not make it true. |

What is your issue with the Iran deal? Surely forming some sort of alliance with one of the few remaining stable powers in a rapidly disintegrating Middle East makes sense? Iran don't want a war and their people have suffered horribly due to the years of sanctions. I think the deal was a massive positive on Obama's CV.

Inspectors now have to give 24 days notice before they can inspect their plants, Iran will also make billions out of this deal. No doubt some of it will be used to fund terrorism - so much for making the world a safer place.
Obama has a habit of announcing such deals as a success and everyone buys into it until they look through all the gloss and then think, oh shit.
