I totally respect the varied and deep muso knowledge held by everyone on this forum. Therefore I was interested in suggestions you have for tracks where the lyrics tell a story or have a very specific meaning/philosophy.

My 8yr old girl is massively into music, real music, which is great. She hasn't a clue what X Factor or 1D is in fact and I intend to keep it that way! But where she hooks into songs is in the lyrics. She likes stuff that tells a story or has a clear meaning (and obviously the tune needs to be great too). Examples of stuff she likes now...

Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles
Children's Story - Slick Rick
Chuck Es in Love - Rikki Lee Jones
War Pigs - Black Sabbath

Your suggestions could help make a great playlist, thankee sirs!...

Cats in the Cradle - can't remember who...
Piano Man - Billy Joel
Eminem - Stan

Harry Chapin was a good story teller in most of his songs.

Try "Taxi", "W.O.L.D", "Cat's In The Cradle" for starters.

I wish I hadn't seen this thread. It has only made me think of tracks I wish I could forget and wouldn't want to hear ever again, so I have to share the pain:-
Deck of cards
Two little boys

Are there any worse than those two - I'm switching off my brain so I don't need to think of them.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime. (Mark Twain) Find me on twitter @derbyhoop

Country music, the only downside being you have to listen to it too. Kenny Rogers or Marty Robbins, the highlight of many a family party when I was a nipper.

When my kids were about that age, my sister-in-law, who has a fatal weakness for easy listening, gave my wife one of those Music to Watch Girls By compilations for the car. The kids loved it - Mack the Knife, Come Fly with Me, Do You Know The Way to San Jose, What's New Pussy Cat, House of Bamboo, etc. Even though I got a bit sick of it, I was happy for them to listen to something a bit better put together than the dross they hear on Capital.
