don't rate him
poor at Newcastle , average at Wigan from what ive seen he isn't a RB either ,
pretty much a younger version of Aaron Hughes

You really think he's worse than Furlong at right back?

And can't do a solid job at centre back when Onouha is inevitably injured or Hill needs a rest?

And can't do a better job at left back than...oh no wait all our left backs are injured.

I don't really see how he could have been average at Wigan and still manage to win a fans vote naming him the best player in the club, twice.

Also, what would be wrong with a younger version of Aaron Hughes? Hughes was a really good player! If we were signing a 29 year old Hughes at this stage I would be quite pleased.

Wigan were a shambles at the back last year
Because he won player of the year in a poor team doesn't make him a great signing
Also Hughes was is a terrible fullback ,
Sorry I don't rate perch and if we did spend a million on him then we have paid 800k to much

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Square peg in round holes, if he plays at right back
Furlong is learning his trade and you cannot compare the two
How about we sign a specialist right back, left back and a proper centre half
Way to much money for a very average player

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

We were a shambles at the back last year, and Green played really well, if he was 29 would he be a bad signing for someone? Also. Perch won player of the year twice, including the season before when Wigan finished 5th (mainly because they played in Europa league for part of season), lost to us in the play-offs and made it to the semi finals of the FA cup. A great season by anyones standards, and he was the best player that year.

He was also player of the year when they came 5th and were the width of a post away from knocking us out of the play-off semis.
Next.

Yep been banging the drum about Gunter for a while mate
A million pounds for a defender who was relegated in the championship
And is coming up to 30 is poor business IMHO

He's not really a right back, but he's played there successfully before, similarly at CB and CM (defensive). A player that can play well across various positions, all of which we are weak in, is a very good signing. It won't be if we don't sign a CB a FB in addition to him, because like PP says we need specialists in those positions, but we are clearly trying to make that happen and in addition to those, we have a commited, consistent and well experienced player that won't cost the earth and can fill in (well) if needed in other areas.

I really don't see the downside in adding a player like him to our ranks.

Also the figure is apparently no more than 700k, according to every source I have seen. Half a million less than Saints paid us just to borrow a player that was shit for us last season.

So if we were a shambles how about we go and get a good CB who knows how to defend and organise
Not a player who has 2 relegations in 3 years, and is coming up to 30
Going back to that semi against us I thought he was average and was bullied by Zamora
A waste of a million quid and wages

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

We're clearly still looking for more defenders to join in addition to Perch, he's not being signed as the answer to all our defensive woes is he, it's to add championship pedigree to an area we are weak in all across the board. We now have a player that can fill in temporarily to cover all positions. He's proven, he's a good pro and he's still only 29 - that's nearly 10 years on Mr Hill!

Whether you rated him the day we played against them in the play-offs or not is irrelevant, the fans that saw him week in week out for 60 odd games that season know a lot more than you about him and they decided he was clearly the best player.

Just asked my mate, who has worked with perch.."any good?"...his reply was.."alright, but tends to ball watch, a bit like Aaron Hughes".

Just to make a point - the thing that worries me the most is last year we went down because our defence was crap big time. Even when HR left and CR came on board we still let in goals for fun and that was with experienced defenders in the squad.

I do not see anything so far that gives me a warm feeling that CR knows how to coach a team to defend. Our two full backs were dreadful and we constantly played players out of position. All this tosh about players who can play in different positions get me wound up. Go and sign a recognised right back, a central defender and a left footed left back and then coach them. It is not rocket science.

yeah, it's really easy to do that. That's why all teams in all leagues are really good defensively.

Have seen Perch be average at best plenty of times, and tend to agree that anything close to £1m is a bit steep for a player of his limited talent. But then I've thought that before, and those players - Hill, Derry, Henry etc - have ended up being the only ones we can rely on.

It's a question of team context as well - there might have be other younger, more exciting options but in relation to the players he'll be working with I think on the whole we're better off for his nous. For instance Burnley just signed a very promising raw powerful young RB in Darikwa from Chesterfield but their side is a lot more settled, more able to accommodate a learner stepping up - with us it would have been a lot messier.

Plus if the club really do think there's a player in Furlong then Perch is more or less the perfect age to bridge the gap as he matures.

I seam to remember the last time we were in the Championship we held a new record for the number of clean sheets. At the time we were not exactly prolific in front of goal and that gave us a big advantage.

Good solid signing maybe a little pricy. Still need a lot more at the back.
