Kevin Gallen's Mum's Magic.. 01:15 - Sep 4 with 9727 views18StoneOfHoop

At Charing Cross Hospital on Thursday afternoon I went for a blood test on the first floor and this Irish woman who was escorting a chair-bound elderly man was wanting the reception..told her where to get the ticket and sorted her out.

She had a quick beady wee appraisal of me three seats along and noticing the moth eaten QPR 1882 Benny - (c) Lblock - woolly hat on me napper and the 70's shield badge on me right tit ..essential everyday accoutrements for the tubby unfashionable Care-In-The-Community Radio Rental 49 year-old Hoops nutter cycling around town..she ventured an opening conversational gambit :
"So you're a Rangers fan are ye? Do you know my son Kevin?"
..and after that Tessa hardly got a word in edgeways in the 4 minutes we - sorry, I - spoke.

Did well to compose myself slightly by not prostrating myself on the floor there and then shamelessly bowing.

Told her I loved her magic son and he loved Guinness and I loved Guinness too and what a player he was and what a b'staad rainy night (was it an evening k-o?) in Portsmouth August 23rd 1996 when in the act of scoring the winner -Tessa corrected me and told me he got 2 - KG broke his leg and lost a yard of pace and how he adapted so well and intelligently to become a hold-up and lay man - brilliant in the 2003/4 promotion season 44 league apps & 17 goals with Furs. Intelligent? most certainly yes! unlike say Rodney Marsh - an R's legend and a laugh of course but not a deep thinker - he talked a hell of a lot of sense on those podcasts..hope he gets all his badges and takes a bigger coaching role at R's eventually. Giving it more blarney I said that Joe,Steve and Kevin all struck me as grafters and really had the work ethic, that's down to the parents innit? - Kev's Dad run all those Whistlers kids teams in Acton, didn't he? she beamed at that, thought she might start purring.

Shook hands with her warmly and Kevin's traditional Old Skool black-capped wee tinker Uncle - Get Well Soon Sir - as I took my leave telling them I was named after the Blessed Plunkett and not that auld b'staad the Accursed Cromwell.

In hindsight really wish I'd gone The Full Finney, and presenting her with some top-of-the-range flowers and turning Simple Minds Alive and Kicking up on the beatbox I'd have told her this:
"I'd just like to say on behalf of everyone associated with Queens Park Rangers football club I just want to say thank-you,thank-you Tessa for what you did sometime, somewhere in Chiswick on the 21st September 1975 squeezing out your third boy so successfully, well done and thank-you."

Cracking read on the Gallens in this article:

Have you LFW punters met any of our stars's family members? What struck you about them?..really want to read some good anecdotes.

I have known the Gallen family ever since primary school (late 70's / early 80's) Joseph was in the same class as my brother, and Kevin was in the same class as my sister. Steve was the in the middle. We played football with the 3 brothers, their dad and uncle every evening in Acton Park.
Joe was a quality player, Steve was just a big unit - not much skill and Kevin was younger than all of us but still a very skilful player.
We all went to Cardinal Vaughan in Kensington and Joe played in a quality team at school - one of the best in London.
Seeing how good his dad was at coaching - he helped my brother become a better player - I am not surprised Steve is considered an excellent coach and judge of a player. Same with Joe. I am surprised QPR have not done more to get Joe and Kevin back to the club.
The Gallen family love of football and QPR is immense.
They are quality people. I came back from Australia at the end of the 2003/04 season and would not have seen the Gallens for at least 10 years. They saw me at the promotion party function at Hammersimth Town Hall and we had a 10 minute chat and made me feel so welcome which was nice.
When my parents passed on all of the family were at both of my parents funerals.
I could not speak any more highly of the family. Great people.

Quality 18Stone. Absolute quality.

I haven't had too many brushes with QPR celebrities. I was school friends with a bloke called Mark Stein who went on to play for QPR for a short while. Seeing him come out in a a QPR shirt was a thrill. We were friends when we were around 13. we used to get into lots of mischief running around London like a pack of ferrel dogs. we would get the the into London, go to a fancy hotel restaurant and order one cup of tea between three or four of us and see how long before we got kicked out. If they were being polite and ignoring us, we would stack up ashtrays and salt and pepper pots in to the tallest tower we could make. The sound of it (inevitably) crashing to the floor was usually enough for them to run us off. I left that school (Hampstead Comp in Wilsden/Cricklewood) and didn't see him for about 5 years. He made his debut for QPR about the age of 18 and I was at the game. He was fast and much more skillful than anyone else at our school but not as good as his big brother Brian who played for Luton and a few other teams (Liverpool, England, ...blah ...blah ...nothing special...).

I saw Les Ferdinand in the same office where I was working a few weeks after he'd signed for Newcastle. I was wearing a QPR "Compaq" sweatshirt and his face lit up when he saw it with the biggest smile.
I told him I was very sorry he had left QPR and that we'd desperately miss him. He shook my hand and wished us all the best for the coming season.

Wish I could be like David Watts

Gavin Peacock was presenting the awards at a football tour i was on as a 13 year old. Had my QPR shirt on underneath my smart shirt when collecting my award and couldnt help but show him the badge showing through. Had a quick chat with me on stage but then came and found me in my seat to talk to me again. Was incredibly kind and gave me some tips to keep playing.
Safe to say the rest of my team had no idea who this strange man was that talking to me (being from Northampton)

Dylan, I used to play football with Frankie and Hughie. There were about nine brothers, weren't there?

I bumped into Les Ferdinand on holiday in St. Lucia just after Euro 96 when he was in the squad but didn't play. He was in a bar with a few mates. I went up to him and said "Les - what are you doing here?' He looked me up and down and quick as a flash said 'What are you doing here?'
Given that he didn't know me from a hole in the road, I thought that was a brilliant reply.
We started chatting and I told him I was a big Rangers fan - he ended up buying me and the Mrs. a drink and we chatted for about 15 minutes about all things Rangers, England and Terry Venables. He was a proper gent and great company.

Glory hunter, me

You are right he had a lot of brothers. I remember that he once got into a fight after school and some of his big brothers turned up and it was a right crew. I don't remember the names (it was 30+ years ago).

I forgot about my Gavin Peacock connection. His best friend/cousin lived next door to me when he was playing for Newcastle (I lived in Durham at the time). He was over there 3 times a week and so I saw him all the time. He had played for us as a youth and made a handful of appearances before he left to play for a 3rd division team that his Dad managed (can't remember which). I knew who he was, but it wasn't like he had a long history with the club. I might not have recognized him except that he had a car that was given to him by a dealership and had his name and picture on the side.

Interestingly, between leaving us and joining Newcastle he was signed by Bournmouth by none other than Harry Rednap. Then he was signed to play for Newcastle by none other than Jim Smith.

18 Stone, that night at Fratton Park was on a Friday, I had bumped off work and went down there with me two sons, we were stood right behind the goal when Kevin scored his second goal we naturally all went mental, unfortunately in an instant I knew something was wrong because you could hear that Kevin had screamed in agony (it was his ACL).
I think at some stage a streaker ran on the pitch?

Nice post fella and be careful on that bloody bike.

King of W12. Surely would be a far superior ambassador for our club than the money grabbing Andy Sinton (who I adored as a player).

I think my first reaction if I saw Fat Frank in a restaurant would be to ask the waiter to box up my food. That's put me right off my steak!

I don't get this one gigiisourgod.
Hows Sinton a money grabber ?
I don't exactly know what he's doing but I've seen him on the offy and he seems to be doing a good job.

Perhaps overly harsh from me. Just resented him leaving us for what I believed was a money motivated decision. Was my fav player at the time. Would love an out and out QPR man in the role or just make King Kev president of LR.
