My mum just renewed with RIAS. Got a much better deal than with her previous insurer, Lloyds bank.

Insurance is no different from anything else in that you get exactly what you pay for.
I'll pm you my details if you want to give me a ring as I'm an insurance broker and can get you far more choice of quotes and cover than you can do yourself by going direct

Woking wants to pay for his porn subscriptions from money earned from someone who makes money from meeting lesbians in a pub with a jam jar and turkey baster.

I recently switched from Direct Line to Liverpool & Victoria (lv.com) and saved about 45%. Also the amount they insure you for rebuild costs was so high that there was no worries that I might underestimate the costs.

It's always worth a phone call to your current insurers if you think the renewal invitation they sent you is too high. Got my car insurance renewals from Direct Line for both my cars a few weeks ago and they had as usual whacked it up. A quick phone call to them saying I was not going to renew because they weren't competitive and 10-15 minutes later, hey presto I was paying less than I was a year ago.

Use a broker. They get the best deals. Mine switches me to different insurers almost every year, to keep it cheap. Using a broker doesn't cost you.

Our family paid into Prudential for decades, cost us a fortune, had part of the roof blow off in a storm about 7 years ago and we made our first claim ever.
They treated us like shit. All nice and luvvy duvvy when we were paying in of course.
The only flammable thing around here is the roof - maybe I'll hunt around for some cheap shit cover for that alone.

Poll: So how was the season for you?

When I told Direct Line I was leaving they immediately knocked £130 of the renewal price. But it was still £100 more than LV.

When I switched my mobile from Vodafone to EE, they immediately cut their charge by 1/3 (to undercut EE by about £0.50 per month).
I asked them why (after all these years as a customer) they were suddenly able to give me a much better deal? The smug twot of a salesman said they can always do something special for their loyal customers.
I said that I've been a customer for 15 years and not once did they try to be proactive about deals. And it's because of that sort of greedy and s#it customer service that I am leaving.

I, like Woking, am an insurance broker and agree with what he says. Use your local broker. Costs you nothing, and you get free, impartial, expert advice. House insurance is a fairly complicated product. Do you really want to be whacking details into the internet and taking the cheapest price you get, only to find when it comes to the crunch that it doesn't cover what you need or thought you were getting? And don't get me started on people like M&S and Asda selling insurance. Why on earth buy from someone like that? We all complain about big businesses making big bucks at our expense. Support small businesses!
