worst away day? 06:21 - Nov 25 with 23773 viewsYorkRanger

Reflecting on the 141 York supporters who travelled to Portsmouth last night to see the team beaten 6-0. Left me thinking about the worst away day that people have had. Could be unfriendly locals, the weather, or just the result.

There have been many, but for me the day I hosted a table at Elland Rd, for a group of predominantly Leeds supporters, when Brian Deane finally worked out how to score, is right up there...

Any offers?

Bristol City when we were both going for promotion.

A. We lost
B. The Wurzels (the real ones)
C. The utter tossers whom I'd never seen before who just turned up for a row. (someone on here said they saw some Chelsea faces as I recall.)

Horrible match nasty atmosphere.

Was there that day also sat in that cowshed that had seats bolted into it, what a crap view that was. As you say, horrible match and nasty atmosphere especially afterwards leaving the ground. God knows what it would have been like had we actually won that day.

The Cornish pasties were nice though, I've just remembered.

I forgot how bad the view was, I was at the back of the stand.

Already been mentioned, the 0-5 at Wimbledon in 2001.

The only minor highlight of the entire day was the scoreboard fcking up and putting us 5-0 up for a few minutes.

Patrick 'Wu-Tang' Agyemang came on as a sub for them that day and looked like Pele.

Leeds away 6-1 loss. Freezing cold, went with a mate.
In the ground half hour before kick off, feeling confident I said to my matelets both have £10 each on Ainsworth to score first (he was 12/1 or something). He said no way and convinced me it was throwing money away.

10 minutes in, Ainsworth curls in a beauty I cheer but simultaneously curse. QPR then implode and Brian Dean is made to look like Ronaldo. Awful. The bet would have covered the whole trip with beers.

If we're going to wade through the mire together, then I am going to be greedy and offer two. Both of which have been referred to above:

1. 20 April 1986 - having only missed the Hull away game on that run to Wembley, the resulting embarrassment was exacerbated by also walking home past loads of piss-taking Oxford fans. On this day it dawned on me; no matter what I do in terms of supporting from the terrace and willing my team to win, at the end of the day it won't alter the outcome and,

2, Huddersfield away - no matter what I do in terms of supporting from the terrace and willing my team to win, at the end of the day, if the players' just cannot be arsed, it doesn't matter jack-shit. One of the most abject and cowardly displays I have ever witnessed, exacerbated by loads of piss-taking Hudderfield fans, but somewhat diluted when they got relegated the following week.

The upshot, if my team gives a dam, tries its best and gives it their all from start to finish, then if I can ask no more of them, I won't complain and won't be overly sour if we lose!

Cardiff Play off Final

I know almost nothing about the Premier League even though I try to catch the big games every now and then at the end of the season. But I will say this, Queens Park Rangers is just a fukking sick ass team name. Just sounds so cool.

Surprised no one has mentioned the 7-1 at Hillsborough in the mid/late 80's.

In my boredom I counted 68 of us huddled up on the back of the terrace

I did mate and the 1-4 at Coventry around the same time. I was in the seats above and I think we had oooooh at least another 47 lol Only funny bit of the day was a Rangers legend who I'm sure a lot of people on here would know (he once did a one man pitch invasion at Highbury and somehow made it back into the clock end) coming into the seats quite hammered giving a massive roar and getting chucked out after about 5 seconds - I think he was on crutches at the time as well. Apart from that it was a pretty s*** day!

The 5-0 at Forest a few years back was particularly hard to take if, like me, you live within walking distance of the City Ground...

I'd almost forgotten that one - Tuesday night, freezing, Nigel Quashie back at the club 'playing' in midfield. Shocking night.

I remember that game well. Lived in Croydon at that time, truly desperate afternoon.

I vaguely remembered the team at that time being sh1te, found the following match report which confirms my recollection...

Saturday, 24 February, 2001
Wimbledon 5-0 QPR

Wimbledon kept their play-off hopes alive, smashing five goals past a shellshocked Queens Park Rangers.

The Dons shrugged off their shock FA Cup defeat to lowly Wycombe Wanderers with a Selhurst Park rout.

Defender Mark Williams made up for the crucial penalty miss that cost his side a place in the cup quarter-finals, setting the Dons on their way with the first goal just before half-time.

Williams struck from close range when the ball ran loose from Neal Ardley's free-kick.

The big Northern Ireland defender could hardly contain himself when he added a second goal, Wimbledon's fourth, with 15 minutes to go.

Ardley again got the assist, Williams latching onto to his corner.

Agyemang assists

Rangers believed the shot had been blocked but the linesman ruled that it had crossed the line.

Williams could have had a hat-trick had the same linesman not earlier ruled the opposite way after a close-range shot ricocheted down from the underside of the bar.

Marcus Gayle and Jason Euell got the goals in between Williams' brace.

Euell got his second and Wimbledon's fifth just before the final whistle after a surging run by winger Gareth Ainsworth.

Ainsworth is finally making an impression after missing the first five months of the season through injury.

Wimbledon striker Patrick Agyemang may not have scored but he did more than most to set up the rout.

His tight turn and cross set up the second goal for Gayle.

And his blistering shot, only parried by Ludek Miklosko, fell to Euell for the fourth.

Rangers had one good chance, a shot from Stuart Wardley that would have given them a 12th-minute lead, but goalkeeper Kelvin Davis was equal to it.

Wimbledon: Davis, Cunningham, Williams, Hawkins, Kimble, Ardley, Andersen, Ainsworth, Gayle, Euell, Agyemang. Subs: Heald, Holloway, Willmott, Gray, Hunt.

QPR: Miklosko, Rose, Ready, Wardley, Plummer, Darlington, Peacock, Kulcsar, Perry, Kiwomya, Crouch. Subs: Harper, Baraclough, Morrow, Ngonge, Connolly.

Referee: P Alcock (Halstead)

Port Vale was the last away game of the 98-99 season (before we beat Palace 6-0 on the last day to stay up). I seem to remember Steve Slade missing a couple of sitters that day, and then Carl Griffiths (?) getting the winner for them and winding us up.

Interesting scenes outside the ground after. Also a lot of us thought we were down, but then West Brom (?) got a late winner against some one which mean it came down to the last day. Plus towards the end of the game, I remember some nutter QPR fan getting on to the pitch and running all the way across the away end and throwing himself into the baying mob of Vale fans in the other corner of the ground.

Fun times!

You're right, that's the won.

Lots of trouble outside and yes, I remember the guy running and jumping staring into the vale fans, priceless!!

When it was all going a bit mental outside and the Vale fans had locked themselves in their bar, a teenage QPR fan got bitten by a police dog.

Brian Rowe came over to stop the lad getting arrested as he had literally done nothing wrong, and one of the horses bit his ear

There have been many bad away days for one reason or other.

Any trip to the Potteries was a pain in the arris be it Stoke or Vale. I’m sure League of Gentleman based their thing on those six villages. Oddest and most backwards part of the Country I’ve ever been to.

Going to Grimsby for three of four years on the trot, all midweek. Lost the lot Seemingly 3-1 every time. One time in mid-winter they were doing considerable shots of Whiskey in the kiosk so just stayed there and got plastered.

Chesterfield is a place I will never go back to. The first time in 2001(?) when anyone who travelled up by train was stopped by the police, filmed, names taken and escorted to a crap pub. Men, women and children. Everyone. We managed to get out via a back door but the walk to the ground was just an excuse for loads of herberts to threaten you. Absolute northern sh!thole.

For some stupid reason i did nearly every game in 2000/01. Quite honestly that was the worst football I have ever seen any team play. I only missed one game and that was home. So it’s tough to pick one away game but the Preston 0-5 will do it. Somehow it was 0-0 at half time and I turned to my mate and said I think we could nick this. Berk. Fighting in the Rangers end and Gerry getting a ton of abuse going down the tunnel. The only time I’ve been to Deepdale.

In terms of rucks. Chelsea was always pretty ropey in the 70’s/ 80’s. Somehow I never had a problem at West Ham. But Leeds in the Cup, 1987 would be difficult to top as I think nearly all the Rangers fans there would tell you. They were complete nutjobs. And I stayed up there for the weekend.

I went to Brizzle city in 77 and we got marched from the station to the ground and we got dogs abuse from the locals in the pubs.I think the old bill walked us the long way round just so we could go past the worst pubs.We got beat 1-0 and Stan broke his leg.
They were also throwing pool balls and other things at us from the other side of the terrace.I've never felt the need to visit there again.

Also,I went to Sheffield Utd on New Year's Day in about 90 or 91.Three of us decided to get there the day before and celebrate the new year in Sheffield. All the pubs closed at 10.30 and there was nowhere else to get a drink so we all went to bed at about 11.30ish.
After 30 mins of the game we were 1-0 down,Wegerle had missed a penalty and Andy Sinton had broken his leg too.

Another mention should go to the Villa game in May 77.It was the first time I'd been outside London to watch us play and we got the supporters train up there.I said to my mate about going in the seats instead of the terraces for a change. We were the only QPR fans there in the stand and on about 80 mins I had to visit the bogs.I came back and we were surrounded by Villa fans. One of them told us to get out or we'd get battered so we left.On the way back to Witton station I had my scarf and my program nicked and and had to run for the train home.We got back to Euston and it was the Man Utd v Liverpool cup final the following day and their fans were fighting each other all over the station.

The following season we went to Birmingham City for a night game and being clever this time we asked Daphne for terrace tickets instead. We met this brummie gang at New St station who chased us all the way to the ground. We went into the terrace only to find that all our supporters were in the seats at the other end.And this gang were on the same terrace as us.I don't remember much about the game, but it certainly was an adventure.

Away games seem quite dull these days by comparison.
