I was never as keen on live albums as a kid but probably prefer them to studio release these days.
Strangers In The Night by UFO. Schenkers masterclass in rock guitar. No Sleep 'till Hammersmith by Motorhead. The Best versions of their best songs. Space Ritual by Hawkwind. An event not just a gig. Rock & theatre hand in hand.
One of the great things about the internet is that it's given me access to tons of shows that bands have recorded but never released. Unedited, imperfect and often better than officially released live albums (Alice Cooper, Tom Petty & Aerosmith all come to mind).
Snap! Would have quoted those exact three albums. The AC/DC one is good too, and of course the definitive "Smoke On The Water" is live..
I think its a format that suits heavy metal more than other genres tbh. Bob Marley's the only other guy that springs to my mind.

Quite pleasing reading this thread that at least two other 'R's agree that UFO's Strangers In The Night takes some beating. Michael Schenker was the guvnor of melodic solos. The only song I'm not overkeen on SITK, is 'Rock Bottom'. The original studio recording on '73's Phenomenon album is my favourite guitar playing full stop. Deep Purple's Made In Japan and Made In Europe. 'Highway Star' on the former, and 'Burn' on the latter, as good as you get rock songs.

I don't have any live albums that i ever play these days. I can't see the point if I'm honest. I would prefer to see a band live than to listen to their recordings, but failing that the studio recordings are usually way better than the live recordings.

one of my favourite live albums is The Name of This Band is Talking Heads They also did the best ever live video film too (Stop Making Sense)
2 great live albums which I was at the gigs.
Tindersticks live at Bloomsbury Theatre. Had to rush back from Old Trafford for that one, the FA Cup match where we all sang about how much we liked Paul Ince.
Green on Red, live at the Town & Country Club.
Yeah, good shout on Tindersticks. Great band to go and see live.
