A quick heads up for a documentary on BBC1 next week..

Death of the Cockney: A BBC film, Last Whites Of The East End, reveals the seismic effects of mass migration on British communities - and how it's often ethnic minorities who are most worried by it

This is a beautifully made film which neither patronises nor sensationalises its subjects. And it does not mince its words – which may explain why the BBC has put it in a late-night slot at 10.45pm and given it minimal pre-publicity.
No doubt, if it was about Tory cuts or the bedroom tax or the arts or was presented by the ubiquitous cross-dressing potter Grayson Perry, it would enjoy loud hurrahs on Newsnight or Radio 4. But I have yet to see a single trailer.
The BBC high-ups would probably prefer it to receive a minimum of fuss. After all, it leaves you realising that the East End we see on its flagship soap, EastEnders, is all wrong.'

I see your point eastside... But it left me feeling completely at a loss about cockney culture and heritage which is dying by the day in the east end.. It was a typical BBC documentary.. It kicked off with a moody shot of a st.george flag tattered and torn blowing on an estate..too much about the girl moving 40mins away..made the family seem silly ...any shots of newham high street were selective.. The old boys in the working men's club were a joy..but it fell flat with editing back to an Indian fella telling us he's a cockney and proud of it...it was a hoch poch of a programme.. It was very average, not a reflection of newham at all.. It's a lot fecking worse.!!.. It was the BBC.!!

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, there were some BBC documentary cliches in abundance; the tattered flag of St. George and the closed down pubs but there was some personal resonance for me.

My dad was born in 1928 to what I would call a genteel working-class background in Forest Gate, London, E7.

I'll probably return to this thread at a later (more sober and reflective mood) date.

In Peace.

Cheers , my old man was from Canning Town ,born the same year as your dad.. I'm born n bred in west London but have always had a close bond with the east end.. I found it all quietly heartbreaking..as you say, maybe return when sober and reflective .. You and me both. All the best.

Thought it was quite well done, was interesting about the bloke at the end despite not being white and being a muslim, after five generations he didn't recognise the place he grew up in.
Drew alot of parallels to the Bush on a match day when it's a different place, more like the old place so it's not just the east end.Any other time in the week you can feel like the only white man in town.
Looking back, what a time we grew up in, all gone now.
I wonder how those businesses will fare with West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium?

Sad state of affairs, immigration is killing this country, and it's culture

A little bit of history.

Just like there was football before the PL, there was immigration before Gordon Brown, especially in the east end where migrants have settled ever since London was a port.

From the jewish rag trade, through migration from Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the West Indies through to Poland and now eastern Europe it has always been there.

I think the "problems" are

a) the scale now and

b) the higher proportion of immigrants who do not want to work

But we're told they all work and add £2 billion to the economy.

So dilution is the order of the day?

It's an issue, and years of fears of being labelled practitioners of witchcraft have stopped people speaking up
Now mates of mine who are Sikh, St Lucian or the bloody Irish (irony attempt) are openly talking about it and questioning the situation it's a bit more "accepted".....oooooh...you're from an ethic minority so you CANT be a racist...
It's all fooked up

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Stayed up to watch this and was very disappointed. It was just the usual TV "human interest" angle, but no explanation of why this situation is so extreme in Newham. Is it a result of official policy, or just a natural phenomenon - ie immigrants settling en masse in an area already populated by other people from their homeland? I was hoping for more of an analysis.

I'm in Lewisham now, and it's a good mixed area. No signs of any particular ethnic group taking over. What's so special about Newham that this has been allowed to happen?

There are veiled women and Burkha shops in Shepherds Bush, too - could the Newham situation happen there?

The problem isn't immigration, it's poorly managed immigration.

As a 'hand wringing liberal' I can see the tragedy in white flight around the East End, Brent, and other areas as much as anyone else.

Difference is, I choose not to direct my hate at those arriving, more towards those with the keys.

I think that's a pretty common attitude among the left.

and c) the higher proportion who don't want to integrate and are allowed not to by those who seek their vote.

Sad.

Quite right

90% of the people in the UK don't have a problem with it , you go back , Irish, West Indian , Ugandans, all settled well here and made a living and interrogated into our society
it was tough for them as they were the outsiders but when people can see you are making the effort to better yourself then people in this country will help and accept you

your right about how this has been managed , we have god knows who in this country who don't want to contribute who don't want to integrate themselves in our culture , we have crime gangs , sex gangs, people traffickers , how the hell was this allowed to happen ,
the one thing I will disagree with you on is the attitude from the left, during Blairs & Browns days in government anyone opposed to mass immigration was shouted down as a racist or Nazi crackpots, it still happens to this day , the working classes whenever your white, black, Asian or whatever have been sh1t on and let down big time over this
communities & values have been lost and they wont be coming back

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Don't the working classes always get shat on?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Interesting too that the working class moving out of an ethnically diverse area is called "white flight", but middle class moving is called "up sizing" or whatever.

It's the motivation.

Being forced out because you haven't got £900k in your skyrocket for your family home is different to moving Toby and Amelia to a postcode with a specialist Bassoon instructor*

* Exaggerated middle class stereotyping has been employed in this post.

I wont comment on the programme, as i cant watch something that will break my heart. A bit like watching the 86 league cup final. Ive just come back from a couple of days trip to the forest of dean with a load of kids aged 8-13 with cystic fibrosis, from every walk of life. Brave, innocent and full of life .

where does it all go wrong ?
