I'm thinking of reading the 'Trainspotting Trilogy' and I remember a few on here eulogising about them... If I were to purchase them, which order is best to read them?

I'm told Trainspotting > Porno > Skag although that's not their publication order. Any help much appreciated!

That is the order they were published in (Trainspotting - Porno - Skag), so that's what I'd go for, although Skag is actually a prequel to Trainspotting (so the narrative order is Skag - Trainspotting - Porno).

Incredible books, although it will take you a while to get into the way they're written. Remember reading Trainspotting the year it came out on a train from Edinburgh to London having spent two "forgotten" weeks on it in Scotland and being blown away.

Glue is also just as good (and features Juice Terry from Porno, my favourite Irvine Welsh character).

Not really helpful to the OP but Filth is also cracking. Film a let down though.

Ive got everything welsh has ever published.

I like the way the characters cross over into his other books like 'Glue' and my favourite 'Marabou stork'

Other classics 'A blind cnt' from 'the Acid House ', and 'Kingdom of fife' from' if you liked school you'll love work'.

'Babylon heights' is good as well..a tale of sex mad drug addled dwarves on the set of 'Wizard of oz'.

The only book of his i didnt like was 'sex lives of the siamese twins. really dissapointing.

defo read them in order of publication simmo. Trainspotting- Glue -Porno -Skag

I devoured all his stuff whilst at uni in the space of about 4 months. Maribou Stork Nightmares was particularly dark!

Trainspotting is probably the best one, but I enjoyed them all. As said, you have to read the dialogue phonetically which takes a bit of getting used to.

Only read Trainspotting (when it first came out). Half the people on the tube were reading it. What a great idea to describe things through pub-style stories.

Not sure why I never read more, perhaps I just had the feeling (or the fear) I wasn't going to get anything new.

Read Trainspotting first then all the others as and when I could get them. Best to read them in order I guess but life's not like that.

Strong and stable my arse.

I've read all his books and I'd just like to say that Marabou Stork Nightmares and Filth are the best two. They're not part of the trilogy though.

Not forgetting 'Blade Artist' that came out recently, which picks up on Begbie after Trainspotting. Although to be honest, it was very weak and best avoided. Although not quite as bad as 'Sex lives of Siamese twins' which is probably the worst book he's written.

Read trainspotting when it came out, then saw the stage play at the trafalgar studios (made notable by the actor playing Renton, actually getting his dick out and pissing on stage) - then they pumped spliff smoke into the auditorium.

Didn't think much of Porno, read loads of the others, but my memory is poor (what was the one where the lad wanted to be a fly on the wall?)

Acid house I think.

Trainspotting, the film, reminded me very much of the lads that were around at the time I grew up so I tried to read the book but gave up. I thought it very difficult to read in that vernacular style - I found I was reading in my head with the voice of Rab C Nesbitt

Acid house, and that scene with his mum and dad is eye-watering!

I though Porno was decent (better than Ecstasy for example). I think the new film is based on Porno, although with Ewan McGregor being in the film I suspect Renton will feature more than he does in the book.

“I'm more of a warrior than you'll ever be. I believe in the class war. I believe in the battle of the sexes. I believe in my tribe. I believe in the righteous, intelligent clued-up section of the working classes against the brain-dead moronic masses as well as the mediocre, soulless bourgeoisie. I believe in punk rock. In northern soul. In acid house. In mod. In rock and roll. "

If you can decipher Irvine Welsh, give James Kelman a go. A much better writer.

I've read them all bar the Siamese twin one.

To me Trainspotting and Skag Boys are head and shoulders above all the other.

I'd read in chronological order from when they were set, not written.

They are all superb.

just finished 'the blade artist' , Crushingly disappointing. The Begbie Story of life as a sculptor in America who goes on the bloody warpath back in leith in the wake of his sons murder.

Welsh has acknowledged himself he has a set of fans, like me, who will buy anything he does . I keep hoping he is going to turn it around.

I think he writes two kinds of books;

1 Deep, dark and disturbing - Trainspotting, Skag Boys
2 Noel Coward does Leith - A Good Ride, The Blade Artist, etc

I like both kinds but for different reasons. Ye ken.

After getting sage advice from you wide cnts, I bought (and loved) Trainspotting and have just about finished Porno, which I also like but not quite as much. I prefer Spud in this one though, and Juice Terry is a fckin great character. Ordered Skagboys and should have it started by the weekend — I heard mixed things but I’m sure I’ll like it.

Then I think I am gonna take a break and read some football ones for a bit, I need a break otherwise I look at every cnt on the tube thinking they need a burst mooth

Mmm, for some reason I feel like a vanilla slice.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?
