I just used Vision Express. Not the cheapest but very thorough and have all the state of the art stuff to test your eyes. I seem to be at the age where I have one pair of glasses to see and another to find the first pair.
Wait 'til you get to bifocals with wide transitions up and down as well as decent left and right angles, add on some anti reflective coatings, decent frames you actually like and £368 for two pairs will seem a bargain.

This is for bifocals. I was expecting to pay maybe £200.
I nearly had a heart attack when she told me how much

I had to get new glasses a few weeks ago, mainly for reading. I went to Specsavers and the eye test and 2 pairs of bins (1pair prescription sunglasses) cost £285. They're not designer glasses, but they do the job.
Poundland. Reading specs cost a pound. I buy ten pairs at a time and leave them all round the house, in the car, in pockets etc. Unless you've got two totally different eyes, they're fine.

Primark do some nice ones for two quid and Tiger are quite smart at four quid a pair. Like you, I have about ten pairs scattered about the house. In the summer when I'm out wearing jeans and a tee shirt I stick my specs in my back pocket. If I sit on them so what.

Hey first they reel you in with the lightweight gear, then little by little they offer you a harder hit and before you know it your into the serious stuff.
Not sure how urgent the need or whether you have hols planned somewhere that could be considered as, an under-developed nation, but if the answers are: not very and yes, then bring your prescription with you and buy them there.
You'll save bundles.
