There is actually some science to this and one side or two depends on the filling. Apparently the butter is supposed to keep the bread from going soggy so if the filling was all egg mayo then you would butter both top and bottom. If on the other hand you had meat topped with sauce, relish or tomato then you would only butter the slice on top. I think it was the chef Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall who did all the research and testing and then basically said sod it, butter tastes too good to only have on one side.

My girlfriend said she's never heard of anyone but me buttering both slices whereas I have never heard of anyone doing just one,so I thought I would choose lfw as a decider as we have the most knowledgeable fanbase on any subject.

Bizarre thread is bizarre.
I've never HEARD of buttering just one slice of bread and yet there are several one-siders on this board who seem to think it's in some normal and/or acceptable.

As a metropolitan middle class liberal it's sourdough whole rye for me. Butter, both sides. If you've got a problem with the fat, just don't butter it, don't faff around trying to hedge your bets. Show some conviction. And nothing that's not proper butter unless it's dripping - no spreads made of hydrogenated oil, chemicals and air, filthy stuff. Or magarine. Only Donald Trump is worse than marge and that's a close call.
