Random Football Question - Non QPR related (at time of going to post) 02:48 - Mar 1 with 384 viewsFredManRave

Does anybody know how the 4 relegation places from the Vanarama National League are decided if 3 or 4 of the clubs being relegated from said League are either in the North or South section?!

For example, at the moment the bottom 4 are Torquay, Southport, North Ferriby and York. Now those of us that know our English geography and/or have access to the internet know that only Torquay would get relegated to the National League South so what would the process be to decide which other team goes to the South League bearing in mind that the other 3 teams mentioned are all (extreme) North! Would it be that those 3 teams go into the North League and whichever team presently in the North is most geographically south would then get moved to the South League?!

All very interesting I know.

So answers on a post...

The first person to answer correctly gets dibs on vandalising the Cardiff coach...

This is something I've wondered about too but never come across the definitive answer. Possibly a midlands team (not neccesarily promoted) gets shunted from North to South and/or vice versa. This season Leamington are looking good for promotion from the Southern Premier (the one below the Southern National). They could play in either area to balance the numbers. Thinking about it the answer must lie in the Southern League Premier, (one of the three 7th tier step 3 divisions that feed the two 6th tier step 2 leagues) as that's in effect geographically the middle earth division (the Isthmian, or Ryman Premier being the most Southernest). In a nutshell when there's a top-heavy (or more accurately bottom heavy) northern or southern relegation cluster from the Vanarama National (or whatever name it might be going under), mid-range teams further down the pyramid from Bishops Cleeve to Coventry Sphincter can never be completely sure which division they'll be playing in the season following. I hope that clears that up. What was the question again?

The bottom four are relegated & then allocated to either the north or south.

In this example three would go north & one south. Therefore of the six promoted clubs (two from each of the NPL, Southern & Isthmian) only two will have to travel north of Oxford.

If these isn't practical, a club currently playing in the north would be moved to the southern section. This would be unusual as it is nortmally clubs moving northwards.

Recently Bishops Stortford, Lowestoft & Oxford City have been in the north & it was very close to Hemel Hempstead having to travel to Hell & back. The boundary is now far south of Birmingham.

The FA make the allocations to all of the leagues in the pyramid annually & it normally includes at least one lateral transfer. The Isthmian League has now lost most (if not all) of North West London & the Northern Home Counties to the Southern League & has gained East Anglia in exchange. The big debate on non league message boards is which of these leagues Bishops Stortford will be in next season (provided their relegated).
