End of term report 16/17 — Midfielders 09:32 - May 24 with 2096 viewsNorthernr

Couple of rants in here, but also two of the three A's (out of 39 players) we're awarding this summer.

On a point of order, it looks as if Sandro might have played 447 of the last 450 minutes he started for this Turkish outfit. Whether he's contributing much - who knows or cares, but on the face of it he's maybe got himself fitter than he managed to achieve here.

If we can keep this midfield together and strengthen a bit behind and in front I don't think we'll be anywhere near what we had to endure this year. Then again I think that every year..

Karl Henry write up very amusing!

Sean Goss should probably go out on loan. I saw a Ryan Manning interview where he said his time playing "man's football" in Ireland made the step up to first team football much easier. Perhaps give Goss the 6 months/year at Exeter City he should have had before he made for the green green pastures of Manchester?

Poll: Expectations for this season?

6 starts in 5 months. Waste of space.

As someone who got himself over-excited about the apparent transformation of the midfield under Holloway, it was doubly grim to realise two things as the season went on.

1. It only functions with Grant Hall involved in it.

2. It doesn't function at all when, whatever crazy formation we're meant to be playing, our only tactic is to boot the ball over the top of it.

And the Jordan Cousins situation is just a real pity.

I think the midfield can potentially work without Hall, our game at home to Barnsley had Manning and Luongo in central midfield, Freeman in a free role on the left and we played some excellent fast paced stuff. Although, equally we were very open and may not have won if Barnsley hadn't spurned 2/3 good first half chances.

Think we lack an effective midfield pivot, and our tendency to boot it long in the general direction of Smith is a consequence of that. Hall's done brilliantly in that auxiliary CB/DM role but his passing under pressure isn't great and he's only just learning the role. Luongo and Manning are both better facing play, and we just don't seem to have someone who has the experience/awareness to find pockets of space deep, receive passes from defenders and pass it quickly on the half turn - something Faurlin was great at. Maybe, hopefully, Goss can grow into that player.

Great stuff Clive, especially on Sandro and Morrison. The cheers when Sandro came on against Norwich in Ollie's first game (and proceeded to put in an atrocious half paced performance that almost cost us the game) were reminiscent of Barton's hero welcome against Sheff Wed.

Undoubtedly he is/was a waste if space, but that wasn't this season's story in particular. The real Sandro story of 2016/17 was that we managed to unload him in January, which was worth an 'A' as a piece of work by whoever managed to achieve it.

Except sadly, as stated in our agent payments, we had to pay whichever leach who brought him here in the first place a seven figure sum to take him away again.

Oh really? I never saw the agent payments list - so we weren't really much better off for getting rid of him?

Well presumably it worked out cheaper than shovelling £60k a week into the useless cnt's pocket for another six months (1.4m) but Hoos cited it specifically as a reason why this year's fees (£2.3m) were higher than we wanted. http://www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/qpr-agents-fees-lee-hoos-3663125.aspx

Ok fair enough. I know that employees are entitled to confidentiality about their wages but we really have no idea as to what exactly goes on do we? You couldn't even be sure that Sandro had contributed much by way of PAYE and NIC the way things are with players like that.
