Has there ever been a poorer election campaign? I'm trying to think of a more incompetent, awful, pitiful effort. A year of saying that you won't call an early election. Then you do after a budget u turn. Then you do another u turn in the middle of the campaign. All the while you refuse to take part in the televised debate. I'm trying to think of a reason why this talentless woman should be prime minister but I've run out of any excuse!

Or is it managing Britain and the British economy that is the poisoned chalice? If so Brexit is only an expression of the problem.

Well it was at the time of the EU referendum

Austerity breeded the leave vote like a puppy farm.

The election - more votes, more seats.

I'm being slightly contrary here because obviously it was a fcking disaster for her but the tories did still 'win' and Labour finished second.

Don't see how you can call this a win in any sense. She didn't win more seats, she lost seats, lost her majority, lost on what she called the election for in the first place: a mandate to go into the Brexit negotiations with a strong hand and majority, lost all credibility, lost the confidence of her party, lost on policies and ceded a huge amount of ground to a Labour party she thought was on the ropes and instead produced the greatest gains in post-war history. Even playing devil's advocate, you have to call that a loss!

Peter Hitchens has produced a typically pithy and damning analysis of the election, worth a read:

"Theresa's Tories... as useful as a zombie on a broken bike"

She could easily be gone by the morning . She meets the 1922 committee of backbenchers tonight ; brought forward a day by them . They are ruthless , if they want her gone she is toast ..

Can't see them getting rid of her, even if they want her gone.

So are Prime Ministers becoming like football managers? (Before revered figures of authority, now dismissed after a few bad results).

I am starting to get genuinely worried now. We are in a constitutional crisis and the people who are supposed to be in charge don't appear to have a clue what to do.

Theresa May is probably ideal for the Brexit process, no need for any original thought or ideas, just has to rubber stamp anything put in front of her.

Once that's more or less sorted, in comes Boris and the Left will be cacking themselves.

Mainly because his whole leadership has been hampered by the pseudo Tory centrists who are now trying to sneak back as if no one would notice. Even Polly Toynbee has joined the Jeremy fan club.

Strong and stable my arse.

North, a letter in the paper today sums up the situation perfectly. Think of the election as the first leg of a European Cup tie. The Tories, who hold the cup are expected to win the home first leg six nil even with half of their first team out. The manage with an appalling inept display to lose it. They are still champions, but they are in terrible trouble for the second leg!
P.S. If the DUP ask for cash to fund stuff in Ulster do you think May might miraculously find the Magic Money Tree?

Yeah, it's a real shame Owen Smith didn't beat him in the leadership election, his brand of 'effective opposition' would have swept Labour into power.

Because the Tories had such a head start. If this had been a race, say 100 metres, the Tories would start 60 metres in front of Labour.

Heh, Heh. I do think, however, his intelligence is somewhat underestimated.

More importantly, he spots the mood. To go for the Leave side was a huge gamble on his part but he called it right. To beat any Labour politician in London also takes some doing.

Sooner or later the Tory party will wake up to the fact we don't want fckin pen pushers in charge (much like the Left have embraced Corbyn).

Quite. I posted this in another thread but worth putting here as well.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/06/jeremy-corbyn-unelectable-

Very well put.

"The trouble with received wisdom is that it rarely comes with a receipt. With the provenance of the “wisdom” unacknowledged, the recipient passed it on as though it were the self-evident expression of their own genius: an inarguable fact plucked from a clear blue sky.

For the past two years, it has been received wisdom that, when put before the national electorate, the Labour party under Corbyn was unelectable. Not simply that it would lose, but that there was no plausible way it could compete. These were not presented as opinions but as facts. Those who questioned them were treated like climate change deniers. Those who held the wisdom were the scientists. To take Labour’s prospects seriously under Corbyn was to abandon being taken seriously yourself.

The political class imparted as much to the media class, and the media class duly printed and broadcast it. The political class, drawn for the most part from the same social class as their media counterparts, then took those articles and bulletins and presented them as evidence. The wisdom was distributed to all who mattered. Those who did not receive it did not, by definition, matter. Within this fetid ecosystem the air was too stale for new ideas to grow."

Yes but they didnt lose the first leg , they won it with a dodgy last minute goal despite being dire .

A moral victory or not getting thrashed merely beaten does not mean you take the cup home .

It just seems so incredibly telling that May has done the apologies and promises to learn from her mistakes behind closed doors for the rest of the cabinet, even offering financial help to ex Tory MPs who just lost their seats.

And the public get "I'm here for five years - on with the job." Like nothing ever happened.

Absolutely says it all.
